According to the 1855 NYS census for Hornby Twp., Steuben Co., my GGgrandfather James P. Ripley was 47 old and born in Washington Co., NY. His death certificate does not give his parents names but indicates he was born in Bridgewater, Oneida Co., NY in 1807. He married Nancy Tallman and their first two children were George N. b.1832 in NY and Charles C. b.1837 in NY. The family moved to Unidilla, Otsego Co., NY for the census of 1840, then to Chemung Co., NY where the next 2 children were born: DeWitt 1842 and Jedidiah 1844 and then to Steuben Co. where Martha was born in 1846. They are found in Hornby, Steuben Co. for the 1850 census but without Nancy. Can anybody make a connection with this family?

I'm a new subscriber to this mail list and I need
some help researching the Dowling and Shechy Families of Elmira, NY. These
two families appear in the 1880 Federal Cencus. In this census Anna M.
Shechy was a widow with two children William and Thersa. Also residing
in the house was Anna M. Shechy's mother Mary Dowling and her brother John
Dowling along with her niece Katie L. Wilder. I was wondering if anyone
had any information on these two families. Anna M. Dowling must have married
about 1860 or so someone by the name of Shechy. It's not clear as to when
he died or was buried.
If this is the wrong mailing address for Chemung
County. Please direct me to the right one. Any help with these two families
would be of great help.
Sincerely
Steve Wilder

also have the name of Ezekial Leonard Sr. as his father. Eber's marriage

are in Vol

I believe you may find a connection to one of the Brown families below.
Obadiah Brown b. 2 June 1756 Roxbury, New Jersey, son of David Brown,
m.Sept 1774 Penelope Swayze. Obadiah served in the American Revolution,
resided at Knowlton, Sussex (that portion that is now Warren) County, New
Jersey and is related to have resided there for fourteen years after the
War. Obadiah is related to have settled in Sheshequin, Bradford County
in 1789 from New Jersey, which would indicate he did not remain in Knowlton
for fourteen years after the War or his arrival in Sheshequin was after
1789.
Enumerated in Sheshequin in 1790, the family consisting of four males
and three females. Assessed there in 1796 and was still living there in
1800. Removed to Candor, Tioga County, New York for one year; Lansing,
Tompkins County, New York (Obadiah Brown and Obadiah Brown, Jr., along
with Zephaniah Brown, Reuben Brown, Israel Brown among list of inhabitants
in Dryden, Tompkins County before 1808) for three years. Enumerated in
Dryden Cayuga (now Tompkins) County, New York in 1810. Removed to Hector,
Tompkins (now Schuyler) County, New York for twelve years (enumerated there
in 1820 census and 1825 state census); and then to Southport, Chemung County,
New York.
Obadiah removed to Wells and first appears on the 1829 assessment list
and was enumerated in Wells in 1830. In the household were three male children
under the age of five, a male of age 20 and under age 30, a female of age
20 and under age 30, and a male of age 80 and under age 90 (presumed to
be Obadiah though his correct age if his date of birth is correct should
have been of age 70 and under age 80). Obadiah last appears on the 1834
assessment list of Wells. Obadiah was an 1835 pensioner, age 78. Obadiah
spent his last days in Columbia Township on a farm in Wolfe Hollow. Penelope
was evidently living in the 1820 census as she is presumed to be the female
over age 45 in the household.
Will of Obadiah dated 19 Feb 1836. Codicil to Will dated 23 Feb 1836
probated 16 Mar 1836. He bequeathed to Obadiah Brown son of Obadiah Brown,
Jr., west half of a lot bounding on Obadiah Brown, Jr., and John Wolf on
the south and Michael Wolf on the east. Obadiah Brown, Jr., to have use
of the same until the said Obadiah Brown is of age. To Obadiah Brown, Jr.,
gray mare, black mare, harness and wagon, ten sheep, and east half of the
lot above described. Obadiah Brown, Jr., is to give Sally Brown one cow.
Daughter, Rachel Minier, ten dollars, to be paid one year after my
decease. Sally Brown, curtains. Obadiah Brown bed and bedding. Obadiah
Brown (probably Jr., but not specified), sole executor. Pension file relates

I'm looking for Townsend and related families. Townsends arrived 1788 from Dutchess Co NY and moved on to Yates Co NY by 1790, but then bounced back and forth for 200 years.
Related names include Struble, Randolph, Gore, Bradley, Merrill and others through the 1800s in the areas of Rome, Sheshequin, Litchfield and spreading out into the surrounding areas.
I have much data and there is a group interested in the Gore surname and related, but always looking for more cousins.

Looking for descendents of the "family historians", W. Charles HILLIS (1896-1962, Herrick Twp. PA) or Francis "Tanny" Hillis GUSTAFSON, last of Kansas City that I know of. Looking for in particular Charles' daughter and my cousin, Margo HILLIS (perhaps married name is Root or Roof?).
I am descended from the Scotch-Irish of the Ballibay settlement in Herrick Twp., Bradford County, and from the MARSH and BROWN families of Towanda/Wysox and perhaps Wyoming County before that. The Hillis' and Nesbitts, and Kennedy's and McCandless', we have back to Ireland but no farther than the immigrant generation. The LAFFERTY and LITTLE' dissappear into Ireland and New Jersey before 1805.
The Marsh, Brown and Champion families we cannot take further than ggparents.
W.Charles Hillis was my grandmother's brother and everything I have says that he was the family historian and had the family bible.
Scott Marsh
I am looking for any information and anyone connected to Fanny Seely KOLB. I do not know if she was previously married and if Seely is a maiden name or a previous married name or a middle name. She is the 2nd wife of William Tillinghast

Sorry, I sent this earlier with nothing in the subject area. Am looking for any information about Carrie Rosalie (also known as Rosa) Morris, born January 27, 1863 somewhere in NY. She married Hiram Kinsman in the Tri-county area in about 1878. They had one child together, May Fanny Kinsman who was born February 2, 1879 in Athens, PA. Carrie shows up in the 1880 census but is listed as divorced. She is living with Mary Morris in Athens, PA but is listed as other. I believe that Mary was her mother but cannot prove it. I believe her father is Philander Morris. I have been told that Carrie died shortly after May was born but cannot prove that either. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
