AUSTIN
Steven W. "Chet" Age 51, of Van Etten, died Sunday, November 26, 2006,
at Arnot Odgen Medical Center, after a brief illness. He is survived by
his sisters and brothers, Linda and Mark Dean, Lancaster, NY, Robin and
Jerry Barefoot, Wichita, KS, Edward and Donna Austin, Van Etten, Thomas
and Joan Austin, Elmira, Robert and Lisa Austin, Carthage, MO; several
aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and many friends. He was predeceased
by his parents, Robert and Betty (Kambeitz) Austin. Steven graduated from
Spencer-Van Etten High School. Funeral services will be Wednesday, November
29, 2006 at 7:30 p.m. at Allen-Manzer Funeral Home in Spencer, with Rev.
Clarence R. Windnagle officiating. Friends may call from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
before the service. Interment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, Van Etten,
NY. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.
BASTIAN - GARLAND
Ruth E. Bastian Age 90, of Spencer, died Tuesday, October 11, 2005,
at Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre, PA. She was born in Newfield, NY on October
22, 1914, the daughter of the late Sanford and Grace (Jackson) Bastian.
Ruth is survived by her daughter, Deborah (Claude) Bailey, Spencer; grandson,
Jay (Michelle) Bailey, Erin; great-grandson, Jacob Rorick, Spencer; three
great-granddaughters, Brianna, Kayla, and Alexis Bailey, all of Erin; beloved
friends, Marie Shappee, Spencer. Ruth was predeceased by her husband, Gerald
M. Garland; brothers, Cliff and William Bastian; sisters, Ethel and Velma
Marshall. There are no calling hours. A memorial graveside service will
be held Saturday, October 15, 2005, at 9 a.m. at Mount Hope Cemetery, Van
Etten, NY. Memorial may be directed to Spencer Emergency Squad, P.O. Box

DAVIS Robert S.
Age 60, of Owego, died in the presence of his family Saturday, July
28, 2007, at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, PA. He is survived by his
wife, Dora Barrows, Owego; son, Rob Davis, Owego; daughter, Joleen Stubbs,
Barton; seven grandchildren, William, Justin, Spencer and Kyle Davis, Ashley
and Katelyn Stubbs, Trevor Wheeler; three brothers, Michael, Tony and Randy
Davis; sister, Shelly Davis; nieces and nephews. Robert served in the US
Army in Vietnam. He was a member of the American Legion Post in Elmira.
Friends may call Tuesday, July 31, 2007, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Allen-Manzer
Funeral Home, Spencer, NY. The funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Interment
will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, Van Etten, NY, with Military Honors.

FLORA Gerald A.
72, Van Etten, NY, died Saturday, August 22, 2009, at home. He was
born in Brownsville, PA, July 1, 1937. He is survived by his wife, June
M. (Pratt) Flora; two daughters and two sons, Penny Flora, Lansing, Allen
(Marjorie) Flora, Las Vegas, NV, Pamela (David) Golden, Ithaca, Douglas
Flora, Tres Pinos, CA; five grandchildren, Jessica Golden, Ashley Golden,
Elizabeth Flora, Douglas Flora, Leland Flora; sisters, Joyce Broida, Long
Boat Key, FL and Norma (Donald) Southard, Toano, VA; brothers, Leonard
(Barbara) Flora, Horseheads and Danny (Sandra) Flora, Lockwood; aunts,
uncles, nieces, nephews and very special companion, "Charlie." Jerry was
predeceased by parents, Charles and Pearl (Cundy) Flora; brothers, Charles
Jr. and Timothy; sister, Patricia Flora Brown. Jerry retired from Streeter
Associates in Elmira after 38 years as carpenter. He was a member of Local
281 Carpenters Union for 50 years. He was a member of Van Etten Fire Department.
Jerry had supervised on the Van Etten Town Highway building and worked
on the Van Etten-Spencer VFW Post 8139 building edition. Funeral services
will be Tuesday, August 25, 2009, at 5:00 p.m. at Allen-Manzer Funeral
Home in Spencer, NY. Friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. before the service.
Interment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, Van Etten, NY. Published

LABUSKI CATHERINE C. WILLIAMS
The funeral was Tuesday, November 28, in Elmira, NY, for Mrs. Catherine
C. Williams, of Elmira, formerly of Morris Run, who died Saturday, Nov.
25, 1972. She was the widow of Clarence E. Williams. She was born
in Morris Run, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Labuski. Mrs. Williams
was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Elmira. Surviving are a daughter,
Mrs. Charles Loew, of Elmira; two brothers, John Labuski, of Morris Run,
and Raymond Labuski, of Elmira; a sister, Miss Sally Labuski, of Morris
Run, and five grandchildren. Burial was in Hope Cemetery, Elmira.
THOMAS L. LANE, 58 of Erin, N.Y. died unexpectedly Sunday, April 8, 2001 at home. Born Jan. 29, 1943 in Sayre, the son of Dighton and Mary Ramsen Lane. An avid hunter who enjoyed serving others. He took great pride in his family and grandchildren. NELSON Gilbert Jr. "Unk"
Age 79, of Van Etten, died Saturday, November 24, 2007, at Wilson Memorial
Regional Medical Center, Johnson City, NY. He was born in Brooklyn, NY,
on May 12, 1928, the son of the late Gilbert and Louise (Cesario) Nelson.
He was predeceased by brother and sister-in-law, George and Doris Nelson.
"Unk" is survived by many nieces, nephews and friends, George Nelson and
Becky Lovejoy, Dustin and Domonik Shedden, Gilbert Nelson, Michelle and
Ryan Nelson, Caroline Frisbie, Thomas Frisbie, Jessica (Tony) Campolito,

PYHTILA - NORTON
Aili Selma Pyhtila Age 88, formerly of Van Etten, died Monday, November
27, 2006, at Schuyler Skilled Nursing, Montour Falls, NY. She was born
April 16, 1918 in Iron Belt, Wisconsin, the daughter of Waino Henrik Pyhtila
and Ida Ylitaoo. She was predeceased by her parents; sister, Aini; and
brothers, Oscar, Waino, John. Aili is survived by her daughter, Jean Pyhtila,
Rio Dell, CA; grandson, Jordan R. Pyhtila and friend, Andrea Morris; great-grandson,
Jadon Tyler Pyhtila, all of Rio Dell, CA; brother, Reino (Teresa) Pyhtila,
Elmira; sister, Aune Knuutila, Ithaca; brother, Fred (Theresa) Maki, Van
Etten; nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be Saturday,
December 2, 2006, at 3:00 p.m. at Allen-Manzer Funeral Home in Spencer
with Pastor Laura K. Daly officiating. Friends may call from 2 to 3 p.m.

Aili enjoyed life, playing cards, laughing. She had a free spirit about
her and proud of her Finnish heritage.
PRATT GOLDA J. GARDNER
Golda J. Age 79, of Elmira, died Tuesday, June 20, 2006, at the Chemung
County Nursing Facility in Heritage Park. She was born in Afton, NY, on
September 18, 1926, the daughter of the late Rexford V. and Mary R. (Pauly)
Pratt. She was predeceased by her husband, Douglas Gardner; two sons, John
and Joseph Gardner; granddaughter, Melissa Tyne. Golda is survived by her
son, James and Viki Gardner, Fernley, NV; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren;
three sisters, June M. and Gerald Flora, Van Etten, Marion A. Rockwell,
Saugerties, NY, Rosemary and Richard Butts, Flagstaff, AZ; several nieces
and nephews. Funeral services will be Sunday, June 25, 2006, at 2:00 p.m.
at Allen-Manzer Funeral Home in Spencer. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m.
before the service. Interment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, Van Etten,
NY.
SHILLING JOHN C
John C. Shilling, 86, of Lockwood, formerly of Van Etten, died
Dec. 7, 1971 at the Tioga General hospital following an extended illness.
Born at Bent Mountain, VA. March 8,1885 he had resided in that area most
of his life and was a farmer. Surviving are his wife, Lena
of Elmira; a son, Gilbert of Lockwood ,NY ; four daughters , Mrs.Florence
Garson of Citrus Heights, CA. , Mrs. Edith Sparks, of San Pablo,Ca.,
and Miss Mary Shilling of Elmira, and a brother, Thomas
Shilling of Salem, VA. ; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Arnold Funeral Home in Van Etten , Thursday and
Friday from 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home
Saturday at 2 p.m. Rev. Robert Johnson of the Community Methodist
Church , Van Etten will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery,

SHEDDEN - ANN M. SHOEMAKER
Ann M. Shoemaker, 54, of Van Etten, NY died March 10, 1991 at
Robert Packer Hospital, PA. Born August 1, 1936 in Troy, PA, she was the
daughter of Herbert and Eva Cory Shedden. Among her survivors are her husband,
Merton Shoemaker of Van Etten; three children and six grandchildren; mother,
Eva Shedden of Elmira Heights; sister, Jean Pierce of Horseheads; brothers,
Guy (Rita) Shedden of Millerton, PA and Donald Shedden of Elmira; mother
and father-in-law. Funeral services were held March 13 at the Allen-Manzer
Funeral Home in Spencer, NY with the Rev. James Peirce officiating and
burial to be in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Van Etten. (TGR, Thursday, March 14,

STRUBLE - WRIGHT, Connie A.
Age 58, of Elmira, NY, died on Sunday, December 14, 2008, at the Arnot
Ogden Medical Center after an extended illness. She was born on October
12, 1950 in Blossburg, PA to the late Leroy Wilbur and Mary Struble. Connie
was predeceased by her brothers, David, Charles and Ken Wilbur and sisters,
Freida Wright, Eileen Vermitte and Bonnie Tuttle. She is survived by her
children, Shawn Wright, Crystal Wright, Elmer (Chico) Wright and Daniel
Wright; former husband, Elmer (Junebug) Wright; sisters, Sarah Brann and
Mary Mendibles; brother, Francis Wilbur; 14 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren,
two step-grandchildren, along with several nieces, nephews and close friends.
Family and friends are invited to call on Thursday, December 18th from
12 to 1 p.m. at the James D. Barrett Funeral Home. Funeral services will
follow there at 1 p.m. Interment will take place in Mt. Hope Cemetery at
the convenience of the family.

WHEELER - Elon Dwight Wheeler, [SRGP 85000] a resident of Norwich, NY, since 1925, died Wednesday, January 13, 1954, at the home of a daughter, Mrs. George F. Godfrey, of 40 Locust St., Norwich. He had been in failing health for several years. Mr. Wheeler was born at Otselic, NY, January 28, 1866, the son of Wakeman and Charlotte Bonney Wheeler. His boyhood was spent in Otselic and Eaton. He attended Colgate Academy and Madison Teachers Training Class and taught school for several years in Pine Woods and Pierceville. In 1890 he married Miss Minnie Mott, who died in 1947. Prior to residing in Norwich he was engaged in farming at Eaton. He was a member of the first Baptist Church of Norwich and served on the Board of Deacons. Mr. Wheeler is well known in Mansfield, having spent much of his life since Mrs. Wheeler's death with his daughter, Mrs. David J. Griffiths, at the Baptist Parsonage. He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Godfrey, Mrs. Griffiths, and Mrs. Lyra M. Brown, of Syracuse, NY; nine grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren. Funeral was held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Breese Funeral Home, Norwich, the Rev. Donald Tubbs, pastor, officiating. Burial was in Mt. Hope Cemetery. - Mansfield Advertiser, January 1954
WIIKI Jacob William
Age 74, Van Etten, died Sunday, September 16, 2007, at Tioga Nursing
Facility, Waverly, NY. He was born in Dryden, NY on February 12, 1933,
the son of John Edward Wiiki and Julia Buchanan. Jake attended Dryden High
School, Class of 1951, playing football and basketball. He served in the
U.S. Army, stationed in Mineral Wells, Texas, Kimpo Air Force Base, Korea,
and Goose Bay, Labrador. Jake worked for Robinson Airlines (Mohawk Airlines)
several years. He retired in 1978 from Iron Work's Union, Local 436, Elmira,
NY. Jake has been very active with the Van Etten Youth Association, serving
as President and Umpire. He was a member of the Mt. Lebanon Lodge #775.
Jake was predeceased by his wife of 40 years, Jane Parke Wiiki; his sister,
Julia Alice Wiiki; his brothers, John Henry Wiiki and Roy Edward Wiiki.
He is survived by a son, Jack Wiiki, Van Etten; daughter and son-in-law,
Lauriann V. and David Nicewander, Richmond, VA; brother, Raymond C. Wiiki,
Lancaster, CA; two sisters, Marion Anna Jolly, Groton, NY and Irene Josephine
Tweitmann, Palm Bay, FL; two sisters-in-law, Julia (Robert) Wandell, VanEtten,
NY and Sally R. Parke, Martin, SD. Friends may call on Wednesday, September
19, 2007, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Allen-Manzer Funeral Home, Spencer, NY,
and Thursday, September 20, 2007, from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Van Etten Community

RUTH MIRIAM WOERNLEY RAUTIO
ORLANDO, FL - Ruth Miriam Woernley Rautio, 92, of Orlando, FL, died July 30, 2009, after an extended illness.Born October 16, 1916, in
Van Etten, NY, she was the daughter of Augustus and Miriam Clark Woernley.
She spent most of her life in Van Etten, Spencer, Ithaca, Danby, and Tioga
Center, and moved from Waverly to Orlando in 1984. She could crochet
a fine tablecloth, sew anything needed, manage a garden that would feed
a family for a year, and identify every bird, tree, and plant on the farm.
She loved books and learning, and inspired her children to do the same.
She took great pride in her children, grandchildren and their children.
She was predeceased by her parents; brothers, Raymond and Laurence; sisters,
Anna Jayne and Laura Buck; and ex-husband, Eino "Ed" Rautio. She is survived
by her children, Jean (John) Snowberg of Jonesborough, TN, Roger of Seligman,
MO, Henry (Renate) of Sierra Vista, AZ, James (Jean) of Phoenix, NY, Teresa
(Michael) Bishop of Smithboro, NY, and Trudi (Kevin) Short of Orlando,
FL; as well as 19 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and three [correction,
should be 5] great-great-grandchildren. Graveside service will be
Saturday, August 15, 10 a.m., at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Van Etten, NY. Pastor
Jim Fox from the Crossroads Family Ministries in Sayre, PA will officiate.
