| Reading a series of obituaries from a single
cemetery, as they are presented here, is like reading the multi-generational
history of a community. These people were the local populace at a particular
time. The people buried here knew each other, were neighbors, relatives
and school mates. They attended church together and engaged in "trade"
or business.
All people are listed in alphabetic order by surname at BIRTH. Women identified by a married alias only and for whom a birth surname can not be identified, are listed on the last page for the cemetery's obituaries. NAIL Bruce A. Age 81, of Horseheads, died on Friday, September 23, 2005, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born on December 22, 1923 in W. Moshannon, PA, a son of Herbert and Beryl Nail. Bruce is predeceased by his infant son John, brother Robert and sister Naomi Reese. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Barbara Roff Nail; son and daughter-in-law James and Karen Nail of Williamson, NY; daughter Nancy Lyke of Newark, NY; granddaughter Sherry Lynn (Kevin) Mount of Golden Valley, MN; grandsons, James (Tracy) Nail of Fairport, NY, Adam (Carolyn) Nail of Greenwood Lake, NY; sisters-in-law, Willadene Liddick of Elmira, Marie Robinson of Candor, Beverly (Richard) McComb of Sonoma, CA; brothers-in-law, Willard (Shirley) Roff of Hampstead, NC, and Richard Reese of Big Flats; daughter-in-law Sandra Nail of Fairport, NY; 4 great-granddaughters, Brinah, Raizel, Shifrah and Shainah Mount; along with many nieces and nephews. Bruce served his country in the U S Marines Corps during WWII; engaging in the Okinawa Campaign. He was a member of the Marine Air Wing Squadron 7. He served as an Elmira Policeman for 5 years before working with the U S Postal Service, retiring after 31 years of service. Bruce was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Horseheads, American Legion Post #154 and a charter member of the West Elmira Volunteer Fire Department. An ardent golfer, Bruce was a member of the Corning Country Club for over 30 years. Family and friends may call at the First Presbyterian Church in Horseheads, 2943 Westinghouse Road, on Monday, September 26, 2005 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. A funeral service will follow at 3:00 p.m., with Reverend Betsey Crimmins officiating. NEAL MARIE J. CLARK
Marie J. (Neal) McLean Age 80 of 308 Tifft Avenue Horseheads, NY died
on Wednesday May 17, 2006 at St. Joseph's Hospital. Marie was born May
27, 1925 in North Union, PA the daughter of the late Warren and Velma Porter
Neal. She married her first husband, James H. McLean, who pre-deceased
her on December 12, 1988. She was also pre-deceased by her parents, her
brother Kenneth Neal, her sisters Arlene Neal Impson Watkins and Martha
Louise Neal Impson and her twin grandsons Joseph and Benjamin McLean. Marie
was a retired cafeteria manager at Gardner Road School in Horseheads, NY.
She married her second husband, Gordon L. Clark, on November 17, 1990.
Marie was an active and devout member of The Calvary Baptist Church in
Horseheads and was a volunteer at The Zim Center for several years. She
loved her family and friends and cherished the time she spent with them.
Marie is survived by her husband Gordon L. Clark; daughter and son-in-law:

NELSON, Harry A., age 73 of Troy RD 2, formerly of Elmira, Wednesday, April 19, 1972, at the Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre. Survived by stepdaughter, Mrs. Anna Mae Kelly of Elmira; step-grand-daughter, Mrs. Loretta Gunderman of Elmira; step grandson Thomas J. Earle of Elmira; great grandson, Charles A. Gunderman of Elmira; half brother, Stanley Gott, of Florida and Francis Gott of Maryland; half sisters, Mrs. Eloise Lattin of Horseheads and Mrs. Margaret Karpinski of Elmira. NEWBURY Richard H. "Dick"
Age 76, of Horseheads, died peacefully at the Robert Packer Hospital
after a short illness and with his family by his side. Dick was born July
22, 1931, a son of the late Harry and Alice Vanderhoof Newbury. He is survived
by his loving wife of 28 years, Elizabeth Crenshaw Newbury of Horseheads;
children, with their spouses, Dan and Sharon Newbury of South Waverly,
PA, Steve and Diane Newbury of Waverly, NY, Rhoda and Christopher DeSanto
of Elmira, Gary and Julie Schock of Waverly, NY, and Ron Silkman of Rochester,
NY; brothers and sisters-in-law, Jack and Joan Newbury of Deland, FL, Ernie
and Mary Kellogg of Horseheads, Miles Kellogg of Waverly, NY, Keith Kellogg
of Waverly, NY, and Harry and Leah Newbury of Johnson City, NY; sister,
Carol Ann Newbury of Lounsberry, NY; along with several grandchildren,
great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Dick is predeceased
by his previous wife, Helen Orshall Newbury; daughters, Sherrie Sullivan
and Jill Sigal; and sisters, Jill Johnson, Vickie Wright and Yvonne Stewart.
Dick was retired from Westinghouse, where he had 37 years of service. One
of Dick's passions was the searching for and collecting of antique tools
and fire hydrants. He was an experienced woodworker and well known as the
neighborhood handyman, always willing to help his neighbors with their

of Water and Walnut Sts., on Thursday, August 30, 2007 from 6:00 p.m. to
8:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Friday,
August 31, 2007 at 11:00 a.m., with Reverend Robert Sherburne officiating.

NEWELL - STEVENS, Nancy K. (Newell)
Age 62, of 314 Lynhurst Ave., Horseheads, died after a brief illness
on Wed., May 14, 2008, at St. Joseph's Hospital. Nancy was predeceased
by her husband, James Stevens in 2003. Her surviving family includes her
four children, Mike Spoore of Virginia, Billy (Cathy) Spoore of West Palm
Beach, FL, Tim Spoore of Horseheads, NY, Jean (Chris) Gill also of Horseheads,
NY; mother, Lillian Newell of Horseheads, NY; grandchildren, Heather, Kay
and Samantha Spoore, Katlyn, Hailey and Colin Gill; siblings, Linda (Red)
Robinson of Elmira, NY, Jerry (JoEllen) Newell of Horseheads, NY, Jim (Frieda)
Newell of Horseheads, NY; several other extended family members, stepbrothers
and stepsisters, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins; and dear friends
including aunt, Anna Briggs; and dear K-9 pal "Jack". She was also predeceased
by her sister, Roberta Pritchard. Nancy was a longtime cashier at the Horseheads
Do-it-Center. She was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. Family

NEWTON Mary A. CRATSLEY, age 59, of Fassett, PA died very unexpectedly Friday, September 3, 1999 as the result of an automobile accident. She was born January 30, 1940 in Corning, NY, the daughter of Henry and Alice (White) Newton. She was born January 30, 1940 in Corning, NY, the daughter of Henry and Alice (White) Newton. Mary attended the east Lindley Baptist Church. For many years she was a cake decorator and baker of Lights Bakery in Elmira and was presently employed by the Marriott Cleaning Service. She is survived by her husband of 19 years, Stanley; son, Stanley R. “Bo” Cratsley of Sayre, PA; step-daughters, Dani Cratsley and Kathy Cratsley, both of Elmira, NY; brother Leon (Karen) Newton of Painted Post, NY; sister, Judy (Duane) Magee of Elmira, NY; four step-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at the Ballard & Lindgren Funeral Home September 8 with the Rev. James Boris officiating and internment to be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Horseheads, NY.
NOBLE Ronald R. Age 54, of Southport and formerly of Horseheads, NY, died after an extended illness on Saturday, December 23, 2006, surrounded by his loving family. Ron was the son of Louis J. and Emma A. Lubnow Noble. He was a dedicated employee of St. Joseph's Hospital for 34 years and was a proud recipient of the Oppy Award in 1993. He will be remembered as an avid NY Yankee Fan and faithful friend to his feline companion, Chloe. Ron was predeceased by his father, Louis in 1964. NORTON - TURNER Mabel L.
Age 86 of 543 Chambers Road Horseheads, NY died on Thursday November
8, 2007 in Louis, Virginia. Mabel was born October 17, 1921 in Chicago,
Illinois the daughter of the late Harold Watson Norton and Rebecca Maude
Smith Norton. Mabel married her husband, Jack L. Turner, on May 28, 1939
and he pre-deceased her on April 28, 2003. Mrs. Turner was also pre-deceased
by her daughter-in-law, Marlee I. Bennett Turner, who died on January 8,
2006 and her sisters-in-law Betty Turner Mullaney and Thelma Turner Seaman.
Mabel was a member of The Catlin United Methodist Church. She retired from
Trayer Products in Elmira, NY after several years of dedicated service.
Mabel loved her family and friends and cherished the time she spent with
them. Mabel is survived by her son: Jack E. Turner of Horseheads, NY; daughters
and sons-in-law: Cheryl Darlene & Donald Carr of Hollis, Maine and
Janice S. & Russell Eshelman of Bumpass, Virginia; 10 grandchildren,
16 great grandchildren, and 4 great great grandchildren; sister-in-law
and brother-in-law: Virginia & Robert Bates of Horseheads, NY; several

OAKES Anna J
Anna J. Glover, 87, formerly of Corning RR 1. N.Y., died Wednesday,
Sept. 2,1992, at Elcor Health Services, following an extended illnesd.
She was a graduate of Wellsboro High School, a member of the Wellsboro
First Baptist Church and a homemaker. Preceding her in death were
her husband, Arthur John Glover, in 1964; a son, George (Pete) Glover;
two sisters, Ella Walker and Margaret Eddy; a brother, Selem Oakes. Surviving
are a daughter, Joann Casterline of Corning; three sons, Charles Glover
of Big Flats, N.Y., Glen Glover of Clute, Texas, and John (Jack) Glover
of Lawrenceville; a sister, Mary Alice Gleason of Corning; a brother,
Milton Oakes of Elmira, N.Y.; 15 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren
and great-great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends called at the Haughey Funeral Home, Corning, on Friday, Sept. 4,
and Saturday, Sept. 5. Services were held there on Saturday, Sept.
5. The Rev. Jerry Griffin officiated. Burial was made in Maple Grove
Cemetery, Horseheads, N.Y.
ORSILLO JUNE M SAWESTER
June M. 64, died unexpectedly on December 13, 2006 after surviving
breast cancer and continuing to courageously battle various other health
ailments. June was born on May 26, 1942, and resided in Chemung County
most of her life. June was the daughter of the late Dr. Giacomo Orsillo
and Mrs. Irene Orsillo-Stemerman. Her first son, Michael, died in 1987
while serving in the Marine Corps, and June would have found solace in
the fact that she died on the date of his birth. June was a devoted wife,
mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend. She is survived by her husband,
Barry; her son, Edward; her daughter-in-law, Teresa; her two grandchildren,
Berkley and Nicholas; and her father and mother-in-law, Joseph and Genevieve
Sawester. Each of them loved her very much and will deeply miss her vibrant
presence. Other surviving relatives include her niece, June Lynne Orsillo;
her grandnephew, Conor Null; her sister-in-law, Joan Phillips; her aunts,
Mary Shank, Betty DeBlasio, and Philomena Heppe; as well as many cousins
and one brother. June also greatly valued her many close friends and neighbors.
June was an active communicant of St. Mary Our Mother Church and the American
Legion in Horseheads. She continually supported the spirit of volunteering,
and throughout her life she generously gave her time and talents to help
with many different organizations, including the Susan G. Komen Race for
the Cure, Reach for Recovery, scouting, and the Compassionate Friends.
June also taught seminars dealing with breast cancer awareness, as well
as a First Responders workshop for criminal justice students at Corning
Community College. June was a retired accountant, and for over 25 years
also devoted much of her spare time to making vestments and paraments for
local and international churches. She was an incredible seamstress and
most of her sewing projects were truly labors of love. Family and friends

NY, on Sunday, December 17, 2006, from 1-3:00 and 6-8:00 p.m. A Mass of
Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Mary Our Mother Church, W. Broad
St., Horseheads, Monday, December 18, 2006, at 10:00 a.m. Interment will
follow in Maple Grove Cemetery.
OSATCHUCK Michael Jr.
Age 65, of 4082 Rockwell Ave., Horseheads, formerly of Montour Falls,
died Thursday, December 6, 2007, at Corning Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Mike was born in Ashland, PA, on June 13, 1942, the son of the late Michael
and the late Margaret (Bowen) Osatchuck Sr. He married Joan Beecher on
July 16, 1966 in Riverside, NY. She survives him. Mike loved fishing. He
collected, repaired and sold old fishing reels and enjoyed spending time
on eBay. An outdoor enthusiast, he enjoyed walking, and also watching golf
and NASCAR. He was retired from Corning Inc., Corning, NY, in 2001, where
he had worked as an electrician for 36 years. "Mickey" was a 1963 graduate
of Corning Free Academy. He served in the Navy from 1963 to 1965 during
the Vietnam War. He is survived by his wife, Joan; two sons, Michael (Heidi)
Osatchuck III of Pocatello, ID, Mark Osatchuck of Montour Falls, NY; one
sister, Diane Scarbrough of Lenoir City, TN; his father-in-law, Mark Beecher
of Clearwater, FL; seven grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and several
brothers and sisters-in-law. Michael was predeceased by his brother, David.
Calling hours will be Sunday, December 9th, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Phillips
Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 17 West Pulteney St. in Corning.
Funeral services will be held there on Monday, December 10th, at 11:00
a.m. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Horseheads. Memorials may
be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital.
OSBORNE Clayton Howard Jr.
Age 83 of Horseheads, NY died on Wednesday August 15, 2007 in Kissimmee,
FL. Mr. Osborne was born on May 19, 1924 in Elmira, NY the son of the late
Clayton Howard and Catherine Janowski Osborne Sr. Clayton was a Veteran
of WWII serving his country with the U.S. Navy and a member of the Bentley-Trumble
American Legion Post #442 in Horseheads, NY. He married his wife Eunice
Isabelle DeWitt Osborne on November 20, 1943 and they would have celebrated
their 64th Wedding Anniversary on November 20, 2007. Mr. Osborne was a
retired pattern maker for General Electric in Elmira, NY and the Business
Manager of the Pattern Makers' League in Elmira, NY. He was a communicant
of St. Mary Our Mother Church in Horseheads. Mr. Osborne Loved his family
and friends and cherished the time he spent with them. He is survived by
his loving and devoted wife Eunice Isabelle DeWitt Osborne; daughter and
son-in-law: Patricia and Jerry Moore of Kissimmee, FL; sons and daughters-in-law:
James T. and Barbara Osborne of Pine City, NY; Thomas C. and Beth Osborne
of Elmira, NY; Lawrence and Laurie Osborne of Clifton Springs, NY; Robert
J. and Sherry Osborne of Melbourne, FL; several grandchildren and great
grandchildren; sister-in-law: Betty Auffhammer of Elmira, NY; several nieces,

OSGOOD - KEHOE Imogene Osgood Judge
Age 84. Mom left us for her place in Heaven on April 22, 2009. She
passed peacefully with her beloved children and daughter-in-law at her
side in Ft. Worth, TX. She is survived by her husband, William Kehoe; children,
Jodelle and Craig Judge; daughter-in-law, Terry Judge; her grandsons, Cory
and Trevor Judge; sisters, Patricia Buell, Marianna Weaver and Barbara
Henry. She was the daughter of William and Anna Osgood of Elmira, NY. Jean
lived and worked in the Elmira area most of her life and was last employed
by the architectural firm of Haskell, Connor, Frost and Foor there. Upon
retiring, she moved to Bradenton, FL, where she married Bill on Anna Maria
Island in 1997. In 2004, they relocated to Ft. Worth to be near their family,
where they lived together always. She was a member of First United Methodist
Church in Horseheads, NY. Memorial services will be held at a later date.

OSLAGER - PURVIS, Carolyn M.
Of Horseheads, NY, died peacefully on Saturday, October 4, 2008, at
the Arnot Ogden Medical Center at the age of 67. She was born December
2, 1940 in Elmira, NY, the daughter of the late Clayton and Alta (Reeves)
Oslager. She is survived by her loving husband of 50 years, Leland "Bob"
Purvis of Horseheads, NY; beloved children, Jeannine (Michael) Mouzon of
Elmira Heights, NY, Roberta (Jay) Hulse of Leadore, ID, Leland Purvis of
Spokane, WA, Kent (Melissa) Purvis of Saginaw, TX, Leslie (VaLynn) Purvis
of Los Alomos, NM, Jeffrey (Michele) Purvis of Elmira, NY, Danielle Hricko
of Elmira, NY; 26 adored grandchildren; sister, Norma (Ernie) Chaapel of

OSTRANDER - Cecelia W. Kiser, age 88 of 47 Davenport Road, Big Flats, NY. Tuesday, June 6, 1995. Mrs. Kiser was born November 21, 1906 in Millport, NY, the daughter of George and Dora Warner Ostrander. She was a member of the Sullivanville United Methodist Church, The Veteran Grange and RSVP. Mrs. Kiser crocheted hat and sweater sets for Planned Parenthood. She was pre-deceased by her husband Harry E. Kiser on January 12, 1966. Mrs. Kiser was also pre-deceased by her sons-in-law; Grant Larabee and Alfred Mizio, her brother George Ostrander, her sister, Mary Wallit. She is survived by her children; Irene Larabee of Horseheads, NY, Ivan and Joan Kiser of Horseheads, NY and Carrie Mizio of Big Flats, NY, grandchildren; Harry Mizio, George Mizio, Susan Hawley, Cheryl Brown, Ruth Bowen and Helen Teed, six great-grandchildren, two great-great-granddaughters, several nieces, nephews and cousins. OSTRANDER - Della M. Deibler, Meador, age 93 formerly of Elmira, NY. died on Monday March 8, 2004 at The Waters of Three Rivers Nursing Home in Painted Post, NY. Della was born March 1, 1911 in the Town of Veteran, NY. The daughter of the late Charles & Sarah Bertha Peterson Ostrander. She was a veteran of WWII serving her country with the US Army. Della was pre-deceased by her son, James C. Deibler, on September 3, 2003. She was also pre-deceased by her sisters, G. Maude Delany, on November 2, 2001 & Nellie Sheffield Morris on September 18, 1981 & her brother Edward Ostrander. Della was a former employee of Remington Rand in Elmira, NY. Della is survived by son: Benjamin L. Deibler Jr. of Elmira, NY.; four grandchildren & ten great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, & her caregivers at The Waters of Three Rivers. George Ostrander the eldest son of Wesley Ostrander of Horseheads,
died yesterday morning in this city, where he was under treatment. He was
thirty-three years old & is survived by three children, Mary, Cecelia
& George. Since the mother of the children died last May, the two little
daughters have made their home with relatives in Elmira & the little
son, remained at the family home. There also survives the father, two sisters,
Mrs. Stewart Morris of Erie, Pa., & Mrs. John Herrick of Elmira; also
a brother, Frank of Scotia, N.Y. A prayer will be held at the home of the

will be held in the Presbyterian Church at Horseheads at 3 p.m. Burial

OSTRANDER Leda M.
Leda M. Ostrander, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Thompson Ostrander, died
at the home in Millport yesterday, aged 2 years. The child is survived
by her parents, Mr. & Mrs. T. Ostrander; two sisters, Hattie Bell Ostrander
& Irene Ostrander, at home. The funeral will be held at the home Wednesday
afternoon at 1:30 o’clock. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Horseheads.

OSTRANDER Leon B.
Age 86, of Elmwood Ave., Elmira Heights, NY, died Monday, September
17, 2007, at his home. Leon was born on November 3, 1920 in Swartwood,
NY, son of the late Jerry and Elva (Sears) Ostrander. Leon graduated from
Van Etten High School in 1939, he also served our country in the United
States Army during WWII. Leon retired in 1983 from Macmillan-Bloedel, Inc.,
where he had been employed since 1950. He was a longtime member and for
many years a deacon at the Hillcrest Baptist Church in Elmira. Survivors
include his wife of 59 years, Esther Elaine (Williams) Ostrander; sons,
Lon (Susan) and William (Joan) Ostrander, both of Elmira; daughters, Peggy
(Keith) Bush of Heuvelton, NY and Cheryl (Rev. Bruce) Rzengota of Norwalk,
OH; brother, Rexford (Esther) Ostrander of Columbia, Pennsylvania; 12 grandchildren;
seven great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. Leon was predeceased
by his daughter, Judith Ellen Ostrander; brothers, George and Ralph Ostrander;
sisters, Frances Rodabaugh and Clara Dense. Family and friends are invited
to call Thursday, September 20, 2007, from 2 to 4 p.m., at the James D.
Barrett Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Friday, September
21, 10 a.m. in Hillcrest Baptist Church, with Rev. Clifford Proper officiating.

be held in the First Presbyterian Church of Horseheads, Tuesday at 11 a.m.,

his wife, Mrs Gladys (Dunham) Ostrander; daughters, Mrs. Joseph (Beverly)

Terri Rae, Laurie, & Michael Greenburg all of Rochester; brothers,

Ostrander was a member, elder & former trustee of the First Presbyterian
Church of Horseheads. He was the former Superintendent of Building &
Grounds for the Horseheads Central School having retired in 1969 with 18
years of service.

Mrs. Anson Ahart died yesterday morning at 5 o’clock at the home of
her son, Fred Ahart at Horseheads. She is survived by her son, Fred Ahart;
a daughter, Mrs. Carrie L. Worden of Elmira; three brothers, Myron Ostrander
of Schenectady; Peter Ostrander of Millport, & Wesley Ostrander of
Elmira. A prayer service will be held at the home Tuesday at 1 p.m. &
the funeral service will be held in the Horseheads Methodist Episcopal
Church at 2 p.m. The Rev. M.A. Soper will officiate & burial will be
in Maple Grove cemetery at Horseheads.- Mrs Anson Ahart died 18 February
1916.

Peter Ostrander died this morning at 3 o’clock at the home of his son,
Edward Ostrander, 152 High street, aged eighty-three years. He is survived
by four sons, Edward of Elmira, Charles of Millport, Anson of Horseheads,
Thomas of Springfield, Mass.; a brother Western Ostrander of Dundee. Mr.
Ostrander was a life member of Old Oak Lodge, F & A.M. & the Eastern
Star Lodge of Millport. The funeral will be held at the home of Edward
Ostrander, 152 High street, Wednesday, at 2 p.m. The Rev. Levern Smith
of Millport will officiate. Burial in Maple Grove cemetery, Horseheads,
with committal there. Members of Old Oak Lodge, F. & A.M. Members of
Old Oak Lodge will meet at their lodge rooms in Millport Wednesday at 12:30
p.m. to attend the funeral.- Peter Ostrander died July 28, 1924.

OSTRANDER WESLEY GEORGE
Western Ostrander, 82, died Friday at 3:30 p.m. at the home of his
daughter, Mrs. Rosella Millspaugh, 409 Phoenix Avenue, after an illness
of nine months duration. Mr. Ostrander was a native of Big Flats &
formerly resided in Horseheads many years. He was a veteran of the Civil
War & served in Co. L. 15th. Regiment, New York Volunteers. He also
was a member of Horseheads Lodge, F. & A.M. The decedent is survived
by two daughters, Mrs. Rosella Millspaugh, & Mrs. Catherine Morse of
Elmira, a son Frank of Scotia, four grandchildren, George Ostrander of
Horseheads; Mrs. Mary Phillip of Canajoharie; Cecelia Ostrander at home;
Elwood Ostrander of Scotia. Mr. Ostrander was the last surviving member
of a family of 11 children. The funeral will be held at the family home,
409 Phoenix Avenue, Monday at 2:30 P.m. The Rev. John Richards will officiate.
Burial in Maple Grove Cemetery, Horseheads, with the committal service
conducted by Horseheads Lodge, F. & A.M.- Wesley died August 6, 1926.
OWEN - MATHEWS, Helen M.
Age 94 of Horseheads, NY died on Wednesday April 29, 2009 at The Arnot
Ogden Skilled Nursing Unit. Helen was born February 14, 1915 in Montour
Falls, NY the daughter of the late John and Leola Smith Owen. She married
her husband, Sylvester L. Mathews, who pre-deceased her on October 13,
2002. Helen was also pre-deceased by her son, Gordon Thomas Mathews, who
died on March 21, 2004 as well as her brother and her sister. Mrs. Mathews
is survived by her children: Sylvia Edmister of Horseheads, NY; Owen D.
& Julia Mathews of Watkins Glen, NY; Diana & Stephen Kapral of
Palm Beach, Florida; John & Phyllis Mathews of Barton, NY; Daniel Mathews
of Van Etten, NY; sister: Reba Goundrey of Horseheads, NY; several grandchildren,
great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of caring friends.

OWEN - GOUNDREY, Reva L.
Age 96, died peacefully at Strong Memorial Hospital, Rochester, NY
with her beloved niece, Gloria J. Hutchings, present on May 22, 2009. Reva
was a resident of Bethany Village for 16 years. Reva L. Owen was born in
Montour Falls, NY, December 25, 1912, the daughter of John and Leola Smith
Owen. She was predeceased by her husband, Lloyd E. Goundrey on October
10, 1988. She and Lloyd enjoyed a happy 56 years together, most of it in
the Waterloo area. Together, they retired from the Rotary gas station in
Waterloo in 1962. Before moving to Bethany, Reva lived at home in Waterloo
and kept busy with Senior Citizen activities, the American Legion, and
the Waterloo Sportsmen and Conservation Club until she fell and had to
go to a Retirement Home in 1993. Reva came to Horseheads (Bethany) to be
near her "dear" niece, Gloria Hutchings. Over the next 16 years they became
very close and special friends to each other, for Gloria she was a second
mother and for Reva, Gloria was the "daughter" she never had. (Gloria's
address is 2838 County Road #7, Montour Falls, NY 14865.) Reva was predeceased
by all of her siblings: her brother, H. Delos Owen, (80) of Montour Falls,
NY on April 7, 1998; her sister, Genevieve O. Harrington, (90) of Odessa,
NY on February 15, 1996; her sister, Helen M. Mathews, (94) of Horseheads,
NY, on April 29, 2009. Reva is survived by several nieces, nephews, great-nieces
and nephews, great-great-nieces and nephews. Reva is also survived by many,
many friends. Interment for Reva will take place at Maple Grove Cemetery
for close family members. A Memorial Service in Celebration of Reva's life
will be held a Bethany Manor on Thursday, May 28, 2009, at 4:00 p.m. Bethany
Chaplain Mary Ann Bernard will officiate the Memorial Service. Reva enjoyed
most all of the activities at Bethany Manor. In lieu of flowers, donations
may be made to Bethany Manor's Activity Fund, 3005 Watkins Road, Horseheads,
NY 14845, in her memory, or to the American Cancer Society, or the American
Lung Association. Gloria would like to thank all of the staff at Bethany
for the wonderful and loving care they gave to Aunt Reva while she was

DOUGLAS L. PACKARD, age 71 of County Route 16, Beaver Dams (Monterey)
died very unexpectedly Wednesday, July 30, 1997 at Schuyler Hospital.
Douglas was born on June 12, 1926 in Burlington Flats, NY and was the son
of the late Joseph and Loretta Jenkins Packard. He faithfully served
in the United States Army during WW II and married Cynthia Williams on
March 22, 1947 in Elmira. He enjoyed auto mechanics and operated
his own business in Breesport for 15 years known as the Packard Garage.
Douglas also took great enjoyment in woodworking. Surviving is his
loving wife of 50 years Cynthia Packard; his daughter, Linda Packard of
Breesport, NY; his sister, Helen Herman of Dryden, NY; along with several
nieces and nephews. Friends are invited to attend a memorial service
on Saturday, August 2, 1997 at Carpenter’s Funeral Home, 14 East Pulteney
St., Corning, NY at 1 p.m. with John Knapp officiating. Memorial
donations may be directed to the American Heart Association, PO Box 3049,
Syracuse, NY in Douglas Name. Friends are invited to call at the
