| Reading a series of obituaries from a single
cemetery, as they are presented here, is like reading the multi-generational
history of a community. These people were the local populace at a particular
time. The people buried here knew each other, were neighbors, relatives
and school mates. They attended church together and engaged in "trade"
or business.
All people are listed in alphabetic order by surname at BIRTH. Women identified by a married alias only and for whom a birth surname can not be identified, are listed on the last page for the cemetery's obituaries. LEO Q. CADY age 66 of 162 Orchard Hill Rd., Wednesday, November 23, 1977. Friends are invited to call at the Barrett Funeral Home, Friday 7 to 9, Saturday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9. Funeral and committal services will be held there Sunday at 2 p.m., the Rev. James Grant officiating. Burial at the convenience of the family in Maple Grove Cemetery, Horseheads. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lena M. Cady; sisters, Mrs. Vera Vaughn of Erin, Mrs. Louise Saxbury of Elmira, Mrs. Vern (Lena) Leonard of Tavares, Fla., Mrs. Marietta Miller of Himrod, N.Y., Mrs. Leonard (Isabelle) Schmidt of Tavares, Fla.; several nieces and nephews. Body at VanBuskirk-Lynch Funeral Home and will be removed to the family home where friends may call Tuesday after 3 p.m. Funeral there Wednesday at 2 p.m., the Rev. Ford Crippen. Maple Grove Cemetery, Horseheads. Survived by wife, Mrs. Agnes E. Cady; niece, Mrs. Myron Westervelt of Horseheads; several other nieces and nephews. CAIN - PIERCE
Doris A. (Cain) Age 77, of Hickory Grove Rd., Horseheads, died surrounded
by her family in the comfort of her home on Tues., Feb. 13, 2007. Doris
was born Jan. 4, 1930 in Brooklyn, NY, the daughter of the late Albert
and Suzie (Kline) Cain. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Theodore
Pierce Jr.; daughter, Susan and Wayne Hagen of Big Flats, NY; son, Douglas
and Anna Marie Pierce of Boxbough, MA; grandchildren, Daniel (Kimberly)
Pierce, Jennifer (Chris) Roy, Jenna and Brittany Pierce, Regis Hagen; great-grandchildren,
Madison and Christopher Roy and Olivia and Alexander Pierce; sisters, Barbara
Cain of Big Flats and Alberta (Sam) Volo of Cazenovia, NY; brother-in-law,
Bruce and (Rody) Pierce Leroy, NY; aunt, Fanny Collins of Pulaski, VA;
and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Doris was the assistant Manager
for Cain's Store in the Arnot Mall. She was a member of the First United
Methodist Church in Horseheads, and a devoted wife and mother and great
supporter of all her husband's endeavors. A talented vocalist, she was
a mezzo soprano studying at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston
and Ithaca College. Doris loved to travel and enjoyed Ogunquit Beach in
Maine. Family and friends are invited to call at the Barber Funeral Home,
413 So. Main St., Horseheads, on Friday, Feb. 16, 2007, from 1-3:00 p.m.
and again 6-8:00 p.m. Her service will be celebrated in the Chapel of the
First United Methodist Church, 1034 W. Broad St., Horseheads, on Sat.,
Feb. 17, 2007, at 11:30 a.m. with the Rev. Dr. Robert O. Sherburne officiating.
Interment will take place in Maple Grove Cemetery in Horseheads. The family
will provide flowers. However, those wishing are invited to remember Doris

CAIN Susie "Susan" Cline Age 98, of Big Flats, NY, died on February 21, 2006 in her home. Mrs. Cain was born in Wytheville, VA on Dec. 25, 1907 to her parents, John A. and Nannie (Dunn) Cline. She was predeceased by her husband, Albert Cain on July 8, 1981; and is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Doris and Theodore G. Pierce Jr. of Horseheads, Alberta and Samuel Volo of Cazenovia, NY, and Barbara Cain of Big Flats. Also surviving are grandchildren, Douglas (Anna Marie) Pierce, Susan (Wayne) Hagen, Nancy (Stephen) Solarsh, Michael (Laura) Volo, Samuel (Annie) Volo, and Jeffrey (Steffanie) Volo; nine great-grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren; sister, Fanny Collins of Pulaski, VA; niece, Dorothy Palmer, also of Pulaski; and nephew, Randall Park of Fort Royal, VA. Mrs. Cain had been a long distance operator in NYC before moving to the area just ahead of the flood of 1972. Family and friends will gather at the Barber Funeral Home, 413 South Main Street, Horseheads, on Friday, Feb. 24, 2006, from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Mrs. Cain's funeral service will be held there at 10:30 a.m. with interment following in Maple Grove Cemetery.
CALETTI - BURGER Ruth T.
Age 85 of Horseheads, NY died on Tuesday October 6, 2009. Ruth was
born June 12, 1924 in Boston, MA the daughter of the late Charles and Antoinette
Massara Caletti. She married her husband, J.C. Burger, on May 23, 1950
and they recently celebrated their 59th Wedding Anniversary on May 23,
2009. Ruth was a former employee of Jay's in Boston, MA. She was also a
former Librarian at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and worked
at various women's stores in Knoxville. Ruth had numerous hobbies and interests.
Mrs. Burger is survived by her loving and devoted husband J.C. Burger;
sons and daughter-in-law: Jeffrey C. & Joan E. Burger of Pine City,
NY and Atty. David C. Burger of New York City, NY; grandsons: Jeffrey C.
Burger of Falls Church, VA and Bryan C. Burger of El Segundo, CA. There
will be no prior calling hours. Private Funeral Services will be held at
the Lynch Funeral Home 318 West Broad Street Horseheads, NY at the convenience
of the family. The Rev Rick Farrell will officiate. Interment in Maple
Grove Cemetery in Horseheads, NY. The family will provide their own flowers
and those wishing may remember Mrs. Burger through memorials to St. Jude's

CALVERY –GERALDINE M. ‘GERRY’ CALVERY FISHER, age 82, of Mill St., Horseheads, died Saturday, March 12, 2005, at St. Joseph's Hospital. Gerry was born Aug. 21, 1922 in Newark Valley, NY, the daughter to the late Harry Calvery and Frieda Cleveland Fitch. She is survived by her husband of over 60 years, Wilbur "Bill" Fisher; children, Janice and Peter Wills of Rochester, NY, William and Pon Fisher of West Bloomfield, MI, Laura and Kevin McGurgan of Horseheads, NY; grandchildren, Jennifer (Todd) Gustafson, William Fisher Jr., Peter Wills Jr., Caitlin McGurgan, Megan McGurgan and Brian McGurgan; one great-grandchild, Gavin Fisher; sisters, Velma McAuliffe of Winter Haven, FL, Jean Owen of Moody, AL; along with one niece and several nephews. She was also predeceased by her brother, Harry "Sonny" Calvery Jr. During WWII, Gerry worked at the former Bendix Corporation. As longtime residents of Horseheads, Bill and Gerry were the owners and operators of Fisher's Furniture Store in Horseheads. She was also a past member of Horseheads Chapter of Order of Eastern Star. CAMPBELL NELLIE
ROSE, Nellie C. Age 90, of Elmira Heights, NY, died peacefully Saturday,
September 16, 2006, at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center in Elmira. Nellie
was born in Horseheads, NY on February 23, 1916, daughter of the late Frank
and Anna (Smith) Campbell. Nellie retired from the Arnot Ogden Medical
Center after 25 years of service. She was a member of United Oakwood Methodist
Church in Elmira Heights and a member of Widow/Widower's Group. Nellie
was a very caring and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
She will be deeply missed by all. Survivors include son, M. Douglas (Mary)
Rose of Elmira; identical twin sister, Ellen Bush of Elmira Heights; brother,
Edwin (Victoria) Campbell of Auburn, NY; grandchildren, Timothy (Judith)
Collins of Yorktown, VA, Lana Collins of Wellsville, NY, Juliane Jordan
of Orange Park, FL, Steven (Lisa) Rose of Goshen, NY, Jeffery Rose of Niceville,
FL, and Matthew Rose of Las Vegas, NV; great-grandchildren, Savannah, Leila,
Alexandra, Heather, Alexis and Emily; son-in-law, James Collins of Big

DENZEL A. CANFIELD age 82 of Bush Ave., Horseheads on Saturday, April 6, 1996 at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center, Mr. Canfield was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy on February 21, 1980. He is survived by his sister, Emma Wilson of Corning, NY; brothers, Clair (Virginia) Canfield of Horseheads, NY, Earl Canfield of Millport, NY, Leland (Mickey) Canfield of Floral City, Fl.; sister-in-law, Doris (Maurice) Wiles of Zephyr Hills, Fl.; other family members include, sister-in-law, Rosa Ahlbrandt of Wilkes-Barre, PA; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Cyril and Margaret Kochanevich of Horseheads, NY; several nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews and dear friend, Gertrude Cooper of Big Flats, NY. Mr. Canfield had attended the First Baptist Church in Horseheads. A veteran of WWII, he faithfully served his country in the US Navy in the Pacific Theatre. In 1975 he retired as a machinist from the former Bendix Eclipse with over 40 years of service. Dennie had been an avid square dancer with his wife, Dorothy and was active in the Big Flats Historical Society. He loved gardening and lounging at Keuka Lake. CANFIELD Earl G. Teacher, Principal, Artist and World Traveler Mr. Canfield was born on May 23, 1915 in the town of Big Flats to George & Mary Benjamin Canfield. He died Tuesday, December 9, 2003. Earl was predeceased by his parents; and three brothers, Densel, Cecil, and Raymond; his only sister, Ardis De Pue; and sister-in-law, Virginia Canfield. His surviving family include his brothers, Leland and Mickey Canfield of FL; brother, Clair Canfield of Horseheads; nephews, Mark (Dawn) De Pue, Terry (Pon) Canfield, Dean Canfield and Bryan (Janet) Canfield, all of Horseheads; nieces, Pam De Pue Rosky of FL, Phyllis (Dick) Canfield Demyan with their daughter, Christina of Big Flats, Linda Canfieldof AZ, Jeri Canfield of CA, Vickey (Bill) Olson of Long Island, NY; in-laws, Doris Canfield and Maurice Wiles of Nelson, PA, and Eldon and Sonja De Pue of FL. Earl earned a 3 year teaching certificate from SUNY Geneseo, a BA Degree from Buffalo State in 1942, and his Master's Degree in Education from Cornell University in 1948. His studies later took him abroad to Oxford University inEngland in 1959 and the University of Vienna, Austria, in 1960. An Elementary School Principal & Art Teacher, he taught at: Park Station, Erin One Room School, Middle Road One Room School, Penn Yan Grade 6, and became Principal of Lennox Avenue in 1945 in Elmira Heights. He retired as Principal, Grade Supervisor and Art Teacher from the Heights in 1974. Earl was also an accomplished painter whose forte was in watercolors. He studied with John Pike, Tom Hill, Robert Wood, Herb Olson, Zalton Zabo, Harold Holley and Shirley Landgraf. An extensive traveler, his visits included Ireland, England, Austria, Switzerland, Germany, Figi, Tahiti, Caledonia, New Zealand, Australia & Northern Finland with a total of 118 countries around the world. Mr. Canfield was an appreciated and dedicated member of our community who participated and had memberships in the Horseheads Art Guild, Elmira Art Club, Big Flats #378 F.& A.M., Cashmere Grotto, Corning Consistory, Kalurah Temple Shrine, County Mental Health Club, Big Flats and Elmira Heights Historical Societies, Elmira Garden Club, Gladiolus Club, Dahlis Society and the Heights Rotary. He will be especially missed at the Heights Rotary where he had perfect attendance for over 41 years. He has served as past president of the following clubs: Horseheads Art Guild, Elmira Art Club, 5 County Social Studies Group, Southern Tier Elementary Principals, Geneseo Alumni Assoc., Horseheads Teacher's Assoc., Elmira Heights Teacher's Assoc. and Elmira Heights Rotary Club. He was a Judge of the Art Show and Flower Show at the county fair and Past Master of Big Flats Masons. He organized three 4-H clubs and a Cub Scout troop. He received a top NYS award for his work in 4-H. He was also a photographer and did slide programs for community groups, clubs, and lodges within a 45 mile radius since1953. He enjoyed being a world traveler having visited 116 countries on 46 trips abroad. Earl shared his travels by showing the films of his adventures to friends, clubs, church groups, etc. over 1,000 times. Friends are invited to call at the Barber Funeral Home, 413 So. CANIS –MARILYN CANIS GRACE age 63 of 410 Bonaview Ave., Elmira, NY died Friday, March 5, 1999 at Strong Memorial Hospital after a lengthily battle with cancer. She was predeceased by her parents, Kenneth and Martha Canis and her sister, Beverly Canis Butters. Survivors include her husband of 44 years, Louis C. Grace; son, Gary L. (Corene) Grace of Elmira; daughter and son-in-law, Linda S. Grace and Brian Rutledge of Eldersburg, MD; grandchildren; Sara and John Grace of Elmira, Elizabeth and Heather Grace-Rutledge of Eldersburg, MD; step-grandson, Patrick M. Ferreira of Elmira; aunt, Muriel Canis of Elmira; mother-in-law, Clara Bell Grace of Elmira; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Richard and Doris Grace of Chemung; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Mrs. Grace was Program Associate at Lake Street Presbyterian Church for over 25 years, where she directed and coordinated the Christian Education Program and the Outreach Ministry of the church. As a leader in the Outreach Program she was involved in the Youth and Teen Clubs, a Men’s Program and a Jail Ministry. She was very active in the Presbytery of Geneva where she was a former Moderator, Commissioner to General Assembly and served on many committee’s including Church Education and Social Concerns. Locally she served on the Board of the Chemung Project for Bail. Friends are invited to a memorial service on Saturday, March 13, 1999 at 11 a.m. in the Lake St. Presbyterian Church in Elmira. Rev. CANNAN JOYCE A. WELCH
Joyce A. (Cannan) Age 80 of Thompson, PA formerly of Horseheads, NY
died on Thursday September 7, 2006 in Montrose, PA. Mrs. Welch was born
March 20, 1925 in Elmira Heights, NY the daughter of the late Roger and
Mina Webb Cannan. She married her husband Ivan J. Welch who pre-deceased
her on September 22, 2001. She was also pre-deceased by her son Roby J.
Welch and her brother Mark Cannan. Mrs. Welch was a member of the Oakwood
United Methodist Church in Elmira Heights, NY. Joyce enjoyed playing bridge
and was a Den Mother when her sons were in Cub Scouts. She is survived
by her sons: Craig Welch of Rochester, NY; Kevin C. Welch of Horseheads,
NY and Brian Timothy Welch of Thompson, PA; granddaughter: Tiffany Welch
of Elmira, NY; several nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of caring friends
including a special niece Shelley Pappas of Pittsburgh, PA. Relatives and

CAREY Gordon A.
Age 81, of First Street, Horseheads, NY, died on Sunday, October 28,
2007, in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his loving family. Mr.
Carey was born on July 20, 1926 in Montour Falls, NY, the son of the late
Arlin and Gertrude Wager Carey. Mr. Carey is survived by his son and daughter-in-law,
William A. and Jan Carey Sr., and his daughter and son-in-law, Judy Lynn
and Gerald Tompkins, all of Horseheads, NY; grandchildren, Bill Carey,
Kim Hogan, Karen Mosher, Sarah Sempler and Ryhan Sempler; along with six
great-grandchildren. A cousin, Clara Hoover of Montour Falls, NY, also
survives him. His wife, Geraldine E. Carey, and grandson, Kevin Tompkins,
predeceased him. Mr. Carey retired from the Chemung County Sheriff's Department
as a Corrections Officer. Relatives and friends are invited to call at
the Vedder and Scott Funeral Home, 122 N. Genesee St., Montour Falls, NY
on Thursday, November 1, 2007, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. His funeral
and committal service will be held following visitation at 1:00 p.m. Interment

CAREY - BONSIGNORE
M. Rose Age 80 of Horseheads, NY died on Saturday February 18, 2006
after a courageous battle with cancer. Rose was born December 17, 1925
in Silver Springs, Maryland the daughter of the late Edward A. and Mildred
R. Bly Carey. She married her first husband, Robert C. Jones, who pre-deceased
her. Rose married her second husband, Frank J. Bonsignore, who pre-deceased
her on July 21, 1989. Rose was a communicant of St. Mary Our Mother Church
in Horseheads, NY and sang with many of The Big Bands during her singing
career. She is survived by her sons and daughter-in-law: Chief Master Sergeant
John & Jennifer Bonsignore stationed with The U.S. Air Force in Okinawa,
Japan and Robert R. Jones of Johnston, Rhode Island; grandchildren: Kristin
Bonsignore, Lauren Boop, Melanie Mimande, Stephanie Jones, Thomas L. Jones,
Jennifer M. Russo, Amanda J. Jones, Chelsea L. Jones, and Gabriel V. Jones;
great-grandchildren: Thomas J. Mimande, Alyssa L. Mimande, James Silvia,
and Thomas L. Jones Jr.; her loving sister: Beatrice Reilly with whom she
resided. "Aunt Peachy" is also survived by her nieces, nephews, grand nieces,
grand nephews, as well as several cousins and a host of caring friends

Age 56 of Spring Hill, FL and formerly of Horseheads, NY died on Saturday
September 22, 2007 unexpectedly. He was born in Elmira, NY on September
6, 1951 to the late Paul and Irene Brimmer Carl. Ron was a Vietnam Veteran
serving his country with the U.S. Army, he was stationed in Nicaragua and
started his military career at Fort Hood, TX. He worked for Board Warner
in Ithaca, NY as a Heat Tree Operator for 29 years and this last year he
worked as a custodian at the Hernando West Middle School in Florida. He
was a member of the American Legion and His Tabernacle Church. Ron loved
camping and boating. He was an avid Buffalo Bills Fan and a NASCAR enthusiast.
He was pre-deceased by his parents; brothers: Stanley Carl, Gordon Carl,
Keith Carl; sister: Jane Carl Taylor; brother-in-law: Raymond C. Summers;
mother-in-law and father-in-law: Eleanor J. Smith and Raymond J. Summers.

STANLEY F. CARLEY age 67 of 312 Westside Ave., Elmira Wednesday, Sept. 7, 1988 at St. Joseph’s Hospital after an extended illness. For nearly 44 years he was the beloved husband of Mrs. Grace (Hamilton) Carley. CARPENTER - Mrs. Alonzo Whitcomb
Mrs. Alonzo Whitcomb died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Charles
Kiser on the Latta Brook Road, in the Town of Horseheads, last night at
11:30 o’clock, aged seventy years. She is survived by her husband; a son,
John Whitcomb; two daughters, Mrs. Abram Ostrander, of Sullivanville &
Mrs. Charles Roberts of Elmira; one brother Daniel Carpenter of Elmira.
The funeral will be held at the home of Mrs. Kiser, Saturday at 2 p.m.

CASTELINE - CURNS, Mildred C.
Age 88, formerly of Elmira, died at the Ontario County Health Facility,
Canandaigua, NY, on August 30, 2009, after a long, hard battle with cancer.
Mildred was born April 25, 1921 in Troy, PA, the daughter of the late Howard
and Ladorna Borgeson Casteline. She was also predeceased by her husband
of 52 years, Harold "Bud" Curns in 1991, son, James Curns in 1992, son-in-law,
Michael Barnes in 1983, brothers and sisters-in-law, Raymond & Evelyn
Casteline, Gerald & Oleda Casteline, brothers-in-law, Richard and Gerald
Curns. Mildred is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Robert &
Patricia Curns of Canandaigua, NY; daughter, Nancy Barnes of Fresno, CA;
daughter-in-law, Eileen Curns of Elmira; sisters-in-law, Rachel and Mary
Curns; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; along with several nieces,
nephews, and cousins. Mildred had lived in the Elmira/ Horseheads area
for 60 years. She was employed by the Horseheads Central School District,
in food services, for over 20 years. Mildred was a former member of First
United Methodist Church, Horseheads and Horseheads Fire Department Women's
Auxiliary. Friends are invited to McInerny Funeral Home, 502 W. Water Street,
on Wednesday, September 2, 2009 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A funeral service

RAYMOND L. CASTELINE
Raymond L. Casteline, 70, of RD 2, Gillett, PA died May 7, 1990
at the Arnot Ogden Memorial Hospital in Elmira. Raymond was a retired employee
of Facet Enterprises with 40 years of service. He had been a member
of the Mosherville Bible Church for over 30 years and was a HAM radio operator
N3 DKW. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Evelyn Johnson Casteline;
sons and daughter-in-law, Harold L. and Sally Casteline of Elmira and Lawrence
Casteline, RD 2, Gillett; daughters and sons-in-law, Carol and James Pendergrass
of Hixson, TX, Brenda Casteline of Ithaca, NY; six grandchildren; sister
and brother-in-law, Mildred and Harold Curns of Horseheads; brother and
sister-in-law, Gerald and Oleda Casteline of Mentone, CA; several nieces
and nephews. Funeral services and committal services were held at the Olthof
Funeral Home in Elmira on May 9 (4 pm) with the Rev. Robert A. Bevins officiating

CASTIGLIONE - VENCE, Faustina
Age 77, of Villa Serene Apartments, and formerly of Niagara Falls,
died Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2008, at the Arnot-Ogden Medical Center in Elmira.
She was born Feb. 17, 1931 in Spezzano, Italy, the youngest of four children
to Biagio and Letizia (fmr. Scarnati) Castiglione. She emigrated to North
America after World War II, first settling in Weedville, PA. She married
the late Raymond Vence (b.1926-d.2001) in 1953 and moved to Welland, Ontario,
Canada, but worked at the Nabisco Shredded Wheat factory in Niagara Falls,
NY. In 1958, she moved to Niagara Falls, NY, where she raised her family.
By 1978 she returned to full-time work outside the home, eventually attaining
the position of first cook in the dietary department at the Niagara Falls
Memorial Medical Center. She retired in 1996, and by 1999 had relocated
to the Villa Serene in Elmira Heights. Beloved mother and grandmother,
she loved to cook for family and friends, attend family events and play
bingo. Surviving is her brother, Filiberto (Phil) Castiglione, of Hollywood,
FL. She was predeceased by her brother, Franco Castiglione; and sister,
Lucia (fmr. Castiglone) Scarnati of Calabria, Italy. Surviving are her
sons and daughters-in-law, John and Rhoberta (Bobbie) Vence of Big Flats,
NY, Franco (Frank) and Kelly Vence of Lockport, NY, and James (Jim) and
Mimi Vence of Clinton, NJ. Surviving are her grandchildren, Sarah Vence
of California, MD, Michael Vence of Rochester, NY, Stephany and Kristina
Vence of Lockport, and Tracy and Anthony Vence of Rochester. Family and

WILLIAM CAYWOOD, a well known and highly respected resident of Big Flats died at his home there yesterday morning. (July 30, 1905) Deceased was sixty years of age. Death was caused by typhoid fever. His wife, a daughter of the late John C. Shoemaker of Horseheads, and three children, Clara, Fanny and Mary survive. Thomas and Lemuel Caywood of Big Flats are brothers. CHAMBERLAIN- SECHRIST, Florence M.
Age 91, of Elmira Heights, NY, died on Monday, April 7, 2008, at St.
Joseph's Hospital. She was born on February 26, 1917 in Veteran, NY, to
the late Fred and Maggie (Stickler) Chamberlain. Florence was predeceased
by her husband, Victor Sechrist in 1977; brother, Leon Chamberlain; and
sisters, Nita Hall and Elizabeth Adams. Survivors include her daughter
and son-in-law, Leona and Ray Mallow of Elmira Heights; grandchildren,
Ray (Karen) Mallow Jr., William (Jeanine) Mallow, David (Helen) Mallow
and Christopher (friend, Michelle) Mallow; several great-grandchildren.
Florence was a longtime member of Oakwood United Methodist Church. She
enjoyed square dancing, crafts, traveling and loved to cook. Family and
friends are invited to call on Friday, April 11th, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
at the James D. Barrett Funeral Home. Funeral services will take place
there at 1 p.m. with Rev. Patrick Holder officiating. Interment will follow

George H. "Hi" Age 84, formerly of 611 Yale Street, Southport, NY,
died very unexpectedly Saturday, May 21, 2005, at St. Joseph's Hospital.
He was the son of the late Floyd S. and Hazel Hardy Chapin. He is survived
by his son, Gary (Melody) Chapin of Bentley Creek, PA; daughter, Katherine
Chapin and special friend, Darcy Gray of Pine City, NY; grandchildren,
William (Kimberly) Chapin, Teresa Drucker, and Patricia (Jeff) Price; great-grandchildren,
Rebecca and Sarah Drucker, Darin Chapin, Hunter Price; very special cousins,
Madge and Arthur Grace and Lynn Hardy; numerous nieces and nephews, including
Nedra (Bob) McElroy and Nancy (John) Sutton. George was predeceased by
his parents, Floyd and Hazel Hardy Chapin; his recently deceased and loving
wife, Genevieve Binney Chapin; brother, William Floyd Chapin; and great-grandson,
Dylan Chapin. George worked at the Eclipse Corporation, machine division
where he met his life-long mate and best friend Genevieve. He also worked
for the Remington Rand for 26 years and retired in 1986 from Hardinge Brothers
after 13 years of employment. George was a devoted and loving husband,
father and friend, and he will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.
He was known for his great sense of humor and his grand attitude toward
life. George was a lifetime member of the Clarence Oliver Post #154 of
The American Legion. An avid flea marketer and over the years could be
found selling his wares on weekends at the Lowman Flea market with his
friend Bill Brown. He loved the Elmira Pioneers baseball team and rarely
missed a game and regularly played cards with the seniors group at Chapel

CHAPMAN - LEWIS, Clara L. (Chapman)
Age 95, and longtime resident of Ridge Rd., Horseheads, died May 30,
2009 at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center. She was born Aug. 4, 1913 in the
town of Veteran, NY, the daughter of the late Reuben and Luella (Parlett)
Chapman. She was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth Lewis on October 31,
2003. Her surviving family includes her daughter and sons, Kathleen (Jack)
Andrews, Fred (Patricia) Lewis, Kenneth (Loretta) Lewis; daughter-in-law,
Virgene Lewis, all of Horseheads; sisters, Doris Baxter and Dorothy Chapman,

and Mildred Lockwood; and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. Along
with her husband, Kenneth and Clara were longtime Ridge Road residents.
Clara was born and raised in the Town of Veteran. She was a 1933 graduate
of Horseheads High School and a charter member of Calvary Baptist Church.
Having worked at several area businesses including the Knitting Mill, Rosenbaums
and as a home aide for many local households. She retired from Schweizer
Aircraft Corp. where she worked in assembly there. Friends are invited

on Tues. June 2, 2009, from 2-4:00 and 6-8:00 p.m. Her service will take

Hazel L. Age 95 of 1 Hill Vale Drive Horseheads, NY died on Monday
August 13, 2001 at home. Mrs. Stowe was born September 14, 1905 in the
Town of Veteran the daughter of the late Herbert and Grace Lee Chapman.
Hazel married her husband Ralph F. Stowe on August 14, 1928 and they would
have celebrated their 73rd Wedding Anniversary on August 14, 2001. Mrs.
Stowe is survived by her husband Ralph F. Stowe ; son and daughter-in-law:

Robert CHAPMAN, 76, of Millport died Sunday, Jan. 5, 1947. He is survived by his wife Lulu; daughters, Mrs. T. J. Irene was born March 25, 1909 in Horseheads, NY the daughter of the late Lewis M. and Sarah Adelle Charles. She married her husband, George S. Besley, who pre-deceased her on August 2, 1974. CHARLES , Orman Goodyear Brigadier General, USA (Ret.) Age 98, of Arlington, VA and formerly a longtime resident of Horseheads died on Thursday, July 20, 2006. Gen. Charles attended public school in Horseheads, NY and graduated from Cornell University in 1932 with a degree in Electrical Engineering and Commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Reserve. After Pearl Harbor, he was assigned to the Aircraft Warning School at Camp Crowder, MO. His tours of duty included Ft. Polk, LA and Ft. Dix, NJ, attendance at Command and General Staff College at Ft. Leavenworth, KS, Seoul, Korea, Norfolk, VA, Ft. Monmouth, NJ, after which he attended the National War College at Ft. McNair, Washington, DC. In 1954, he was assigned as Commanding Officer at Kagnew Station in Asmara, Eritrea. He returned from Africa in 1957, at which time he was assi gned to the Pentagon. In 1959, he was promoted to Brigadier General and worked as the Deputy Commanding Officer as well as the Commanding Officer of the Army Security Agency. He retired in June of 1963 after which he graduated from George Washington University with an MBA degree. In 1967, he was elected to the board of the First National Bank of Arlington serving as Board member until 1974 and later, Sovran Bank of Virginia which eventually merged into Bank of America. He was a 50 plus year member of the Horseheads Old Oak Masonic Lodge #364, a life member of the American Legion Bentley-Trumble Post #442 Horseheads, NY and a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Horseheads, NY for 50 years. He was a member of The Army Navy Country Club, the National Sojourners Chapter 440 and the George Mason Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. His hobbies also included genealogy, actively participating in various ham radio groups (call number KD4ET), playing golf, swimming, huntin g and fishing. Gen. Charles is preceded in death by his parents, Frank Elmer Charles and Luie (Goodyear) Charles and his wife of 54 years, Elizabeth (Deahl) Charles. He is survived by his loving daughter, Nancy Elizabeth (Charles) Rogers; and grandson, Peter Frank Rogers, both of Albuquerque, NM; as well as, his devoted and caring niece, Mary Deahl of Woodbridge, VA and her children, Roberta and Paul Deahl, Jr. He is also survived by his caring neighbors of many years, Nancy and Jane Renfro. Age 58 of Horseheads, NY. He was born March 18, 1950 in Elmira, son
of the late Paul E. and Marguriete (Ford) Chrisjohn and died Saturday,
September 27, 2008 at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center after a brief illness.
He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Ellen; son and daughter-in-law
Tedd and Sharon of Gillett, PA; brothers and sister-in-law Paul of Horseheads,
Robert and Sharon of Horseheads, David of Elmira; sisters and brother-in-law
Beverly Sigwald of Elmira, Joyce and L. Michael Pierce of Rochester along
with several nieces and nephews. Larry was an avid hunter. Family and friends
are invited to visit Walter J. Kent Funeral Home, 858 Lake St. at Washington
Ave., Elmira on Monday, September 29th from 6 to 8 p.m. His funeral and
committal services will follow at 8 pm. Rev. Dr. Larry Appenzellar will
officiate. Interment will be in Maple Grove Cemetery at the convenience
