Maple Grove Cemetery Tombstone Listing and Office Records
Joyce's Search Tip - January 2008

Do You Know that you can search just the Obituaries on the site by using the three County Specific Obituary selections in the Partitioned search engine at the bottom of the Current What's New Page? You can narrow your search by including a key word in the cemetery name or a township name in addition to the surname you search. Then select the Find All Words option.
You'll also find obituary and other newspaper clippings using Clippings partition. Additional clippings can be found in the Birth, Marriage, and some other partitions.
Reading a series of obituaries from a single cemetery, as they are presented here, is like reading the multi-generational history of a community. These people were the local populace at a particular time. The people buried here knew each other, were neighbors, relatives and school mates. They attended church together and engaged in "trade" or business.

All people are listed in alphabetic order by surname at BIRTH. Women identified by a married alias only and  for whom a birth surname can not be identified, are listed on the last page for the cemetery's obituaries. Please send in typed obituaries for people buried in our local cemeteries. If possible include name of newspaper and date. Send typed in your email or in attached Word files. Send to Joyce M. Tice (JoyceTice@aol.com)

William’s Great Grandparents were: George William & Rhoda (unknown) Barnes. George was born in Connecticut (unknown location) in 1789. Rhoda born in Massachusetts in 1791, both her maiden name and location of birth are yet unknown to us. They were married in abt. 1814 in Virgil, Cortland, NY. Their son (William Edwin’s Grandfather) William George Barnes was born September 1st, 1815; d. Jan 21st, 1898. George and Rhoda also appear to have had one (1) daughter, -  Elizabeth, born in 1825, who married Andrew Jachson ‘Jack’ Colegrove* in abt. 1840. Elizabeth and Andrew removed to Farmington, Tioga PA, next to Elizabeth’s brother’s Township in Middlebury, Tioga, PA, and had seven children there: Delphina, b. Apr. 10, 1849, m. Sawyer of MI, 6 children; Dennis Wilbur, b. abt. 1851, of Tioga, PA; Emory J., b. abt. 1853, of Orono, Osceola Co., MI; Leonora Orcela, b. Jul 1, 1857, m. Dan Goodrich of Tioga, PA, 8 children; Polly Almedia, b. May 14, 1859, m. William Gale of Keeneyville, PA; Tabor T., b. aby. 1863; and, Morgan P., b. abt/ 1861, -  both of Tioga, PA.   Sources: Family Bible records – Kenneth Gee and Ancestor.com records for marriage.* Spelling of Andrew’s name is as I found it.

William’s Grandparents were:
Paternal:  William George and Philena C. Starkey Barnes. William G. removed to Hammond, Middlebury Township, Tioga Co., PA. and spent his remaining life farming there. Philena (also spelled in numerous ways – Philania, Phiolena, Philinney, Phiolania,  etc.)
Maternal: Philena C. Starkey Barnes, the daughter of William and Mary E. (Benjamin) Starkey, who removed from NY to Middlebury Township, Tioga Co., PA when William was in his 50’s. Philena’s siblings were: Harriet m. Luther Washburn; Clarissa m. Allen Daggett of Southport, NY; Samuel B. deceased; Eliza m. Erstine Ives of Middlebury, PA; and John m. Caroline Palmer – resided in Middlebury, PA.   Source: Joyce M. Tice Tri-Counties Genealogy Site – census, Township Directory, and see Biographical Sketch at http://www.rootsweb.com/~srgp/1897/ch60b.htm

William G. and Philena had nine children, six of whom lived to adulthood – Harriet Higley; maybe an Elliot, but probably Eliab (misspelled) m. Estella Viola Dailey; Allen Dexter m. Lucy Patterson; Mary; Emma Glendora m. William Ryan; Eleazer Edward (aka Edward Eleazer or E.E.) m. Carolyn ‘Carrie’ Baker. Kenneth Gee’s Bible record indicates one of the deceased children was named Hamel.

William’s Parents were:
Eliab M and Estella Viola Dailey(misspelled Daley sometimes) Barnes. Eliab and Estella’s children were born in Hammond, PA, but the family eventually moved to Southern Tier, NY. (i.e. 1910 Federal Census, Big Flats, Chemung Co., NY Eliab, Estella, Eva May & Henry J.) Their children were:  William Edwin m. L. Elizabeth Axtell Barnes; Oliver Lewis m. Loretta (unknown) of Bath, NY; Eva May m. Harry Smith; and Henry J. m. Hazel Desalt Barnes.
The 1910 Census indicates that Eliab and Estella had been married for 25 years (m. abt. 1885), - and that Eliab had married once before this union.  Family rumor is that twins were born of that first marriage, though no records have been found yet.
Estella Viola Daily was the daughter of O. E. (Orlando E.) and Fanny J. (unknown) Dailey of Middlebury, Tioga, PA (1880 Census); Farmington, Tioga Co., PA (1910 Census). Fannie gave birth to 10 children, seven of whom lived to adulthood. Orlando is listed as having been born in Pennsylvania (abt. 1828); whereas Fannie is listed as born in New York abt. 1839. They had been married for 47 years in 1910.  Their children were:  Edith J. b. abt. 1862; Viola E. (Estella Viola) b. abt. 1864; Orlando E. b. abt 1866; Olive M. b. abt. 1869; Nellie M. b. abt. 1872; Mary H. b. abt. 1874; and, E.E. (a girl) b. abt. 1876. All were born in PA.
