Here is a  PICO Search Engine for you to use. This is the ONLY search engine that can reliably pick up information from my several inter-linked site directories and that also separately indexes the partitions to the various sections of the site to help you narrow your search. This starts at the main page of the site and indexes the 16,000 pages at joycetice.com as well as the very few left on rootsweb in the ~srgp, ~patioga, ~pabradfo, and ~nychemun accounts.

Many Thanks to the site guests who have chipped in to cover the costs of this search engiine. We will start our 2009 contract with search capacity of 17, 000 pages and increase in increments of 1000 as the year and added pages progress. Your donations are needed to cover this cost which is now well over $1600 per year. I can't do it FOR YOU without your help.  Donor Listing & Directions

See   PARTITIONED search engine to search just sections of the site. -- Below
Use the Drop Down Windowto search selected areas of site for Obituaries and other slected information
These represent directories in the site's structure. Clipping section includes scrapbooks of obituaries, marriages, gossip, etc. It also includes new obits where the cemetery is not identified. The Obit by cemetery pages are by county BUT obits may be on an obit by cemetery page OR in the Clipping - scrapbook section. Check both. Also remember that people are often buried in a different county than the one in which they lived or died. Another point to be aware of is that some of the very small cemeteries that have few obits will have the obits on the cemetery listing page. They will be missed by this partitioned search of just the obituary directories. They will show up on the search which covers the entire site or the burials.

If you do not click the drop down list, you will think this is just the same form of the search engine we have had for several years. It is NOT - It is a major enhancement of its utility which I will develop further depending on positive feedback I do or do not get. At this point it partitions the obituaries and cemetery listings only. While obits are added daily, the search engine in not reindexed that frequently. Added obituaries will only register when the search engine is reindexed.
Here is an IMPORTANT tip - If you use a DATE restriction in your search, be aware that refers to the date I last changed a particular page - It is a file date, NOT a date for an event.

This PARTITIONED Search engine HERE is your most valuable tool for getting maximum results from this Tri-Counties Site.

Once a thriving town on Barclay Mountain, County, Laquin was built in 1902 as a lumber town and eventually held five major factories, churches, schools, a large hotel, depot, store, restaurant, over 100 homes and many other buildings. Stretching over a mile in length, Laquin was home to approximately 1,500 people. But when the lumber was exhausted from the mountain, the buildings were dismantled and the town finally deserted in 1941.

Participants will step back in time and tour the streets of Laquin using over 100 photographs, many produced from glass plate negatives. Some of the photos to be featured in this program have never been viewed by the public and were not included in Bradford County Historical Society’s 2007 book on Barclay Mountain.

The doors will open at 6pm, with the program running from 6:30 – 7:30pm. Admission is $4 Adults, $3 for SRAC members and students. The public is advised that the SRAC gift shop and exhibit hall will also be open during this time as well and to please consider arriving early to browse these areas before the program.

Native American Pottery Roundup and Symposium
Saturday, August 15, 2009 from 1pm – 4pm
At SRAC, 345 Broad Street, Waverly, NY
(see attached flier)

SRAC’s unique ability to bring collectors and professionals together to create the region’s largest Native American exhibit for a day is back! The Native American Pottery Roundup and Symposium invites collectors , professionals and museums of the region to roundup all of the region’s Native American pottery for a one day event that includes the following educational presentations:

What Can We Learn from Pottery?
By NYSAA President, William Engelbrecht- Remains of ceramic vessels are often the most common artifact on Iroquoian village sites and are certainly the most studied in New York State.  The methods used to study ceramics vary depending on the purpose of the study.  This talk will discuss some of the different types of ceramic studies that have been done in New York and will suggest avenues for future research.

Dr. Engelbrecht received his Ph. D. from the  University of Michigan 1971 and retired in 2003 after teaching for 30 years at Buffalo State. He received the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1990. His publications include Iroquoia: The Development of a Native World (Syracuse, 2003). He is currently president of the New York State Archaeological Association.

Pottery, Maize and Long Houses
By NYS Museum Research & Collections Director, John P. Hart, PhDIn this presentation Dr. John P. Hart reviews new evidence, much of it obtained from cooking residues adhering to pottery, that demonstrates northern Iroquoians practiced agricultural systems based around three crops: maize (Indian corn), common bean, and squash that each have a separate history in central New York.  Also reviewed is recent research that indicates long-term trends in pottery technology are associated with increased importance of agricultural crops in the diet.

Dr. Hart received his Ph.D. in Anthropology from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. He regularly publishes articles on the results of his research in professional journals such as American Antiquity, Journal of Archaeological Science, and Journal of Archaeological Method and Theory, among others.

COLLECTORS: Doors open at noon for secure setup. Please call Ted Keir at (570) 888-2718 to reserve space for your pottery display. Admission is free for all who share their pottery for the event!

BRADFORD COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY TO PRESENT "THE BRINKS ROBBERY"

The Bradford County Historical Society will host a free program entitled, "The Brinks Robbery," scheduled for August 21, 2009 at 6 p.m. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Although the event is free, participants are asked to register by calling 570-265-2240 or by email at info@bradfordhistory.com.

The program will be presented by Guy Abell, a member of the Board of Trustees of the Bradford County Historical Society.

Known as the "Crime of the Century," the armed robbery of the Brinks Building in Boston, Massachusetts, took place on January 17, 1950. With no leads, the case might have been considered the perfect crime.

Then Towanda Chief of Police, Dean Meredith, cracked the case. Before long, two of the robbers would end up in the Bradford County Jail, the building that now houses the Historical Society.

Come and learn about the fascinating story that was so sensational that it wound up in the "Saturday Evening Post".

This program is part of the 2009 "Friday Night at the Museum" programming series that will be held the third Friday of each month from May until October. Each event is held in the Great Room at the Bradford County Historical Society,  located at 109 Pine Street, Towanda, PA. Free refreshments are provided at each program.

The Bradford County Historical Society is a recipient agency of the Bradford County United Way. For more information about the society visit www.bradfordhistory.com or the Curator's Blog at www.bradfordcurator.blogspot.com.

LeRoy Heritage Museum Building to be Open July 4th

The Board of Directors of the LeRoy Heritage Museum invite everyone to come and see all of the renovation work that has been completed at its building over the past year. The first floor of the museum building will be open at LeRoy Old Home Day, July 4th, beginning at 9:00 a.m.

Several projects have been completed since July 2008 including: a new heating and cooling system, the completion of drywall throughout the building, light fixtures installed and other electrical work completed.

Interior painting is currently in various stages and door trim is being installed. Three restored and three new doors are being prepared for installation, stainless steel handrails have arrived for the interior stairway, and handrails are on the way for the exterior of the building.

Most of the funding is in place to install a new hardwood floor in the first floor of the building.

Contractors and volunteers have been in and out of the building since March of this year, finishing projects with the goal of having all of the major projects done by LeRoy Old Home Day.

“Once we finish installing handrails, fire extinguishers and meet all of the remaining code requirements, we are looking forward to receiving our Building Occupancy Certificate which will allow us to open the building for regular use,” said Matt Carl, president of LeRoy Heritage Museum, Inc.

Museum volunteers will be selling funnel cakes and ice cream outside during Old Home Day, with a display and gift items inside the building. The popular LeRoy patriotic t-shirts have returned and will be on sale. Proceeds will benefit the work of LeRoy Heritage Museum, including the building project.

The museum will accept donations of historical items pertaining to LeRoy and Barclay Mountain inside the building. Many wonderful items have been acquired for the museum and the research library recently.

LeRoy Heritage Museum, Inc. is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to the preservation of LeRoy and Barclay Mountain history and the education of the public about that history. The facility, which will house a museum on the first floor and the Rancy K. Morse Memorial Research Library on the second floor, is located on Mill Street, LeRoy, PA.

For more information about LeRoy Heritage Museum, Inc., visited the website at www.leroyheritage.org. The LeRoy Heritage Museum is a recipient agency of the Bradford County United Way.

Hi Joyce,

Your Tri-Counties site is terrific, and often the best source for obscure pictures and information about the small towns that dot Tioga & Bradford Counties.

PennDOT has historic county maps online here:

Route numbers changed often and alignments shifted as the Department upgraded roads, and these maps help verify locations of schools, churches, etc.

Enjoy,

Joyce,

I also remembered an additional source of historic maps that would also include NY: http://historical.mytopo.com/

For example, here’s a 1902 map showing Lawrence Twp. in Tioga County and others south:

Joyce's little and occasional blog July 9

Well, it happened. Many might have predicted it, but now it is official. I am no longer a real person. Today I attempted to write a comment on Mansfield's Facebook page congratulating the Mansfield High School Class of 1959 on their upcoming fiftieth anniversary celebration. I have written comments before but that apparently was while I was still a real person. The message I got today is that to add my message I have to verify my account. The procedure, it explains, is to determine that only real people are writing comments by having them enter their mobil phone number. Then they will text a message confirming that your account is verified and you are a real person. Well, I don't have a mobil cell phone number. I don't need one. I had a car phone for  many years from the time they first came out until I more or less retired, but I discontinued it when I found I no longer used it. For many years I was a cutting-edge technophile, but now that stage has passed and I no longer exist.  I guess I am just a figment of my own imagination. Following is the message I attempted to add to Mansfield's Facebook page:

Congratulations to Mansfield High School Class of 1959 celebrating their fiftieth anniversary this weekend. Marieva Loesche, MU President,  will be giving a short presentation to them on Twain Theater, and I will be showing them my Mansfield History slide show that many of you have seen at 1890s or at my museum. It includes photos from the Sesquicentennial book I co-authored and many hundreds more of Mansfield's past. I hope they have a great celebration and good weather.

Signing off, the former real person. Joyce M. Tice
PS How many more unreal people are lurking out there? Send me a note if you are one of them..
PS again - Am I supposed to be ashamed or something because I don't have a mobile phone number? I also do not twitter.
