During the Revolutionary War, General Washington  under the direction of Continental Congress orders General John Sullivan  to route out the British  allies in this region. Ultimately this meant to engage in a campaign against the Iroquois Nation and their allies who had been raiding the frontier of New York State and Pennsylvania under the direction of the British. Starting in Athens, PA, Sullivan led 5,500 troops through our region,  and decimated all of the Indian villages and crops  stretching from Athens, PA to Western New York.

The  presentation is a must for anyone wanting to learn more about our region’s role during the Revolutionary War and the effects it had on the Native American cultures of our region.

The doors will open at 6pm, with the program running from 6:30 – 7:30pm. Admission is $4 Adults, $3 for SRAC members and students. The public is advised that the SRAC gift shop and exhibit hall will also be open during this time as well and to please consider arriving early to browse these areas before the program.

“Laquin & Barclay Mountain” by Matt Carl, Bradford County Historical Society

Tuesday, August  4th , 2009 - 6:30 – 7:30pm

Once a thriving town on Barclay Mountain, County, Laquin was built in 1902 as a lumber town and eventually held five major factories, churches, schools, a large hotel, depot, store, restaurant, over 100 homes and many other buildings. Stretching over a mile in length, Laquin was home to approximately 1,500 people. But when the lumber was exhausted from the mountain, the buildings were dismantled and the town finally deserted in 1941.

Participants will step back in time and tour the streets of Laquin using over 100 photographs, many produced from glass plate negatives. Some of the photos to be featured in this program have never been viewed by the public and were not included in Bradford County Historical Society’s 2007 book on Barclay Mountain.

Native American Pottery Symposium
Saturday, August 15, 2009 from 1pm - 4pm

SRAC’s unique ability to bring collectors and professionals together to create the region’s largest Native American exhibit for a day is back collectors , professionals and museums of the region to roundup all of the region’s Native American pottery.  The event includes educational presentations about our local pottery by NYS Archaeological Association President, William Engelbrecht PhD, and NYS Museum Research & Collections Director, Jon Hart, PhD.

What Can We Learn from Pottery?
By NYSAA President, William Engelbrecht- Remains of ceramic vessels are often the most common artifact on Iroquoian village sites and are certainly the most studied in New York State.  The methods used to study ceramics vary depending on the purpose of the study.  This talk will discuss some of the different types of ceramic studies that have been done in New York and will suggest avenues for future research.

Dr. Engelbrecht received his Ph. D. from the  University of Michigan 1971 and retired in 2003 after teaching for 30 years at Buffalo State. He received the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1990. His publications include Iroquoia: The Development of a Native World (Syracuse, 2003). He is currently president of the New York State Archaeological Association. 

Pottery, Maize and Long Houses
By NYS Museum Research & Collections Director, John P. Hart, PhDIn this presentation Dr. John P. Hart reviews new evidence, much of it obtained from cooking residues adhering to pottery, that demonstrates northern Iroquoians practiced agricultural systems based around three crops: maize (Indian corn), common bean, and squash that each have a separate history in central New York.  Also reviewed is recent research that indicates long-term trends in pottery technology are associated with increased importance of agricultural crops in the diet.

Dr. Hart received his Ph.D. in Anthropology from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. He regularly publishes articles on the results of his research in professional journals such as American Antiquity, Journal of Archaeological Science, and Journal of Archaeological Method and Theory, among others.

Join us for the opening of Fabrics of Our Lives: Life Moments Through Clothing, 1860-1900 on Thursday, July 30 from 6:00 to 
8 pm. Ever wondered what you would have worn if you lived 150 years ago ….. Fabrics of Our Lives examines clothing styles from infancy to adulthood and social trends during the Victorian Era.  Highlights include selections from the  children’s clothing collection, Susie (Clarke) Dean’s wedding, and the stages of a wealthy woman’s day as seen through clothing.  Fabrics of Our Lives will be on display through March 31, 2010. 

Friday, July 10 @ 12:00 pm:  Chemung River Walks and Talks: The Chemung River and You -   Jim Pfiffer, director of the Friends of the Chemung River Watershed, will discuss how the  water cycle and how the river flows through all of us.  Meet at Minier’s Boat Launch in Big Flats.  The Chemung River and You is free and will last an hour.  Participants should wear comfortable shoes and be able to walk several yards and climb a slight incline. Those under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Space is limited to 20 people, so call 607-734-4167 to make reservations.   Don’t forget to bring a lunch and portable lounge chair! Chemung River Walks and Talks are sponsored by the Chemung Valley History Museum and the Friends of the Chemung River Watershed. 

Friday, July 17: Get on the Bus Local History Bus Tour: Elmira’s Civil War Sites – Visit Civil War sites in Elmira.  The sites will include the army camps and Confederate prison camp.  The two-hour tour will start at the Chemung Valley History Museum at 10:00 am and return at 12:00 pm for lunch at the museum.   Tickets are $15 for members of the Chemung County Historical Society and $20 for non-members.    For reservations or for more information call 607-734-4167.  Reservations must be made by Friday, July 10 and advance payment is required. 

Thursday, July 23 @ 6 pm to 8 pm: A Great Day For Elmira and Elmira Then and Now Book Signings – Author Geoffrey Stein and photographer Gary Packard will be at the Chemung Valley History Museum signing copies of their books.  Stein is the author of A Great Day for Elmira: An Illustrated History of Twentieth-Century Grade Crossing Elimination Projects in Elmira and Elsewhere in New York and photographs by Packard are featured in Elmira Then and Now.  The event is free and open to the public.  Copies of the books will be available for purchase during the event
 

The Bradford County Historical Society announces that it is now open for the 2009 season.

The museum is located in the former Bradford County jail, located at 109 Pine Street in Towanda. The museum features two floors of exhibits that can be found in the former jail cells and other rooms. Each exhibit features an accompanying easy-to-understand descriptive panel that includes stories, statistics and photographs.

Visitors will find additional new displays this season including a collection of radios from the 1930's through the 1960's; and a collection of circus equipment used by Frances "Butch" Brann and his wife, Amelia "Mil" LaPell, famous aerialists and former residents of Canton. The circus collection was recently acquired by the Historical Society.

BCHS also announces that Heather Godshall is this year's Summer Tour Guide. Heather is a 2008 graduate of Troy High School and is currently a student at Lafayette College in Easton, PA. She will be glad to give you a tour of the museum when you visit this summer.

The Board of Directors of the LeRoy Heritage Museum invite everyone to come and see all of the renovation work that has been completed at its building over the past year. The first floor of the museum building will be open at LeRoy Old Home Day, July 4th, beginning at 9:00 a.m. 

Several projects have been completed since July 2008 including: a new heating and cooling system, the completion of drywall throughout the building, light fixtures installed and other electrical work completed. 

Interior painting is currently in various stages and door trim is being installed. Three restored and three new doors are being prepared for installation, stainless steel handrails have arrived for the interior stairway, and handrails are on the way for the exterior of the building. 

Most of the funding is in place to install a new hardwood floor in the first floor of the building. 

Contractors and volunteers have been in and out of the building since March of this year, finishing projects with the goal of having all of the major projects done by LeRoy Old Home Day. 

“Once we finish installing handrails, fire extinguishers and meet all of the remaining code requirements, we are looking forward to receiving our Building Occupancy Certificate which will allow us to open the building for regular use,” said Matt Carl, president of LeRoy Heritage Museum, Inc. 

Museum volunteers will be selling funnel cakes and ice cream outside during Old Home Day, with a display and gift items inside the building. The popular LeRoy patriotic t-shirts have returned and will be on sale. Proceeds will benefit the work of LeRoy Heritage Museum, including the building project. 

The museum will accept donations of historical items pertaining to LeRoy and Barclay Mountain inside the building. Many wonderful items have been acquired for the museum and the research library recently. 

LeRoy Heritage Museum, Inc. is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to the preservation of LeRoy and Barclay Mountain history and the education of the public about that history. The facility, which will house a museum on the first floor and the Rancy K. Morse Memorial Research Library on the second floor, is located on Mill Street, LeRoy, PA.
