are indebted to our friend, B. B. Holiday, of Crooked Creek, for the particulars
of the following casualty, which occurred near Bennett's Mills, in Middlebury,
on Saturday last. It seems that Mr. Versal D. Ives was at work in his garden,
which is separated from his house by a stream of water, over which there
is a foot bridge, and about which his two younger children started for
the garden to call him to dinner. It is supposed that in attempting to
cross the bridge they fell into the water; or that one, in falling, dragged
the other from the bridge. They were not seen by Mr. Ives, who soon returned
to his house, when his wife inquired for the children. The father, learning
of their absence, started at once for the creek, and about 25 rods below
the bridge, discovered the body of his little daughter, lying by a log
with her face down in the water. The little boy had floated about 3 rods
farther down. The father rescued the bodies from the water, and immediately
used ever |
