d in Wellsboro, July 4th, Mrs. Sally
Lindsay, aged 80 years. She was the widow of David Lindsay, who came to
Wellsboro in 1808, and died in 1827. At the time he came, there were but
3 or 4 houses where Wellsboro now stands, and these were log houses. One
of these, a large log house, stood near the site now occupied by F.D. Bunnell,
another, and smaller one, just back of the hotel now kept by Sol. Bunnell,
one near the present residence of Dr. Packer, and another, partly built,
near John Bache's. These, with a log meeting house, standing where Monroes
hotel barn now stands, comprised the village in 1808. In the year 1808
the county was organized, and the first meeting of the Commissioner was
held in the log meeting house. The next and subsequent meetings were held
at the house of David Lindsay, who was for many years Commissioners Clerk.
He also kept the first store ever kept in Wellsboro. Mrs. Lindsay was the
last survivor of those who came so early as 1808. |

Wetherbee, Abigail |
The funeral of one of the erliest settlers
of Tioga co., Mrs. Abigail Wetherbee, took place in the M. Episcopal church
of Wellsboro, May 5th. She was 85 years of age, and at the time of her
death, we believe, had been a resident of Delmar longer than any other
person then living in that township. She experienced religion at the age
of 18 years and was baptized by a minister who was one of only 16 regulary
ordained Methodist ministers then in the United States. Whe had 10 children,
44 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren, making 70 in all, 54 of whom
yet are living. |
