WOOD, MINERVA M. ROUSE (SRGP 1478)
Mrs. Minerva M. Rouse Wood, wife of the Rev. G.
R. Wood, passed away quietly at her home in Penn Yan, N.Y., on August 3.
Funeral services were held at the Free Methodist church of Painter Run,
of which she became a member twenty years ago. The deceased was born
in Schuyler county, N.Y., in 1853 and came to Pennsylvania at the age of
twelve years and resided with her parents on Pickle Hill until her marriage
at the age of fifteen. Five years ago she and her husband entered
into Rescue Mission work and devoted her time and talent to the work of
bringing souls to Christ. In her last illness she was attended by
five competent physicians, all agreeing that to them the cause of her illness
was unknown. Apparently her life work was ended and her Master had
called her home. Deceased is survived by her husband and nine children,
Henry, Lamont and Mrs. Golda Sargeant of Corning, N.Y.; Joseph of Bailey
Creek; Edgar and Leon, of Mainesburg, Mrs. Bertha Kristler, of Benton,
N.Y., and Nellie and Faye at home. She also leaves a brother, George
and a sister, Mrs. Nelson Love of Mansfield. (Handwritten date 1906)
She married Rev. George R. Wood 29 MAR 1868 in Mansfield, Richmond Township,
Tioga County, Pennsylvania. (Rev. George R. Wood reference MCW 2)
(Rev. George R. Wood is #591.)
George was born 15 JUL 1849 in Sullivan Township,
Tioga County, Pennsylvania. George was the son of Justus Wood and
Elizabeth Schoolcraft Rose. He married Lydia A. Orr* 4 FEB 1907.
George died 12 APR 1919 at age 69. George was listed as the head
of a family on the 1880 Census in Covington Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.
Information on this family partly supplied by Edna Mae Brown (Wood) in
interview with John A. Tice 1993. Book produced by Mabel Cramer (Wood)
is referenced by page. George Wood was a Baptist minister in Laurence County,
New York. A handwritten family story in our possession tells the following
story. I will transcribe it as written although it is written from the
point of view of George, and it is more accurately Minerva's story. The
'invisibilty' of women even to their own descendants and even with a bullet
in their leg is part of the history of women in this country and should
be faced head on without camaflouge. "George Wood and his wife went west
as did some of the others in the family but George didn't stay out
there. However, during their travels in a covered wagon the rifle went
off in the wagon and the bullet landed in his wife's leg. He didn't know
how to reach a doctor but drove on in hopes of finding someone who could
help. Finally a group of horesemen rode up and stopped at their wagon and
asked if they had any extra food they could share. George told them he
had very little food and besides he had to get help for his wife. One of
the men said that perhaps he could remove the bullet, he wasn't a doctor
but he had removed several . He did get the bullet and then did accept
a share of their water and the group rode on. A bit later another group
of horsemen came through and asked if George & his wife had seen any
other riders, said they were on the trail of a bunch of outlaws, the Jessie
James gang. Upon description it was decided that it must have been Jessie
James himself who removed the bullet from Minerva's leg."
Family legend recounts that George had a powerful
voice. When he sang he could be heard all over Mill Creek. Zeke Wood, a
present day descendant, is said to have the voice of Rev. George.
