Subject: Chemung County: Mary "Polly" BABCOCK / Elisha BABCOCK
From: "John Washburn", john@washburnresearch.org
Date: Fri, 31 Dec 2010

Dear Joyce.
Does anyone have any information on:
a. Mary/Polly BABCOCK,
b. her father Elisha BABCOCK, or
c. her Rodnok BABCOCK
from the Chemung/Tompkins area?

I am descended from Mary BABCOCK, aka Polly BABCOCK. Her first husband was a man named Woolley and her second husband (and his second wife) was Samuel Munro. I believe she may have kin in the Veteran, Chemung, NY area.

I know for certain from census records that in 1850 Mary H. (Babcock) Munro was living in Edmeston of Otsego County, New York, died in and is buried in Otsego county and was born somewhere in New York state about 1805. From the published genealogies of Thomas Pope and Josiah Munro I know her first husband was named Woolly (or Wooley) and her second husband was Samuel Munro/Monroe. The spelling of Monro is varied and Munro, Munrow, Munroe, Monro, Monrow, Monroe are all commonly used within the American families of the Munro Clan.

I have found two sets of records on RootsWeb.Ancestry.com for a Mary “Polly” Babcock who may be this ancestor of mine. Polly is a common nickname of Mary for the early 1800’s.

One set of RootsWeb.Ancestry.com records names Polly Washburn as the wife of Pardon Wooley and as the wife of Samuel Monroe:
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=h_rice&id=I78
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=steinbauer&id=I11100

A second set of RootsWeb.Ancestry.com records describes a Mary BABCOCK, daughter of Elisha BABCOCK of Veteran, Chemung, NY and brother to Rodnok BABCOCK.
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=willyeye&id=I30872
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=anna08&id=I4377

I know the GEDCOMs found on RootsWeb.Ancestry.com can be very unreliable, but all other persons named as Mary/Polly Babcock found in genealogies for the Babcock family are well document to have spouse other than Wolley or Munro, but all Babcock Geneologies agree that there was a family exodus of BABCOCK families from Rhode Island and Connecticut to Central New York (e.g. Oswego, Otsego, Chenango, Chemung, Tompkins, and Madison Counties) in the Late 1790’s and early 1800’s which then go undocumented. (Probably the occupation of the previously Iroquois land.

This purport family of Elisha BABCOCK of Veteran, Chemung, NY fits this migration profile and the daughter Mary “Polly” BABCOCK is good candidate to be the Mary H. Babcock who is my Gggg-Grandmother. The age is correct. She is otherwise unconnected to other known Mary/Polly BABCOCKs. Elisha is one of many BABCOCKS listed within the published BABCOCK genealogies who “disappear” into New York.

Does anyone have any information on:
d. Mary/Polly BABCOCK,
e. her father Elisha BABCOCK, or
f. her brother Rodnok BABCOCK from the Chemung/Tompkins area which would either confirm or deny that the 1805 Mary/Polly BABCOCK of Chemung/Tompkins is or is not the same 1850 Mary/Polly BABCOCK of Edmeston, New York?

Thanks in advance for any time you may spend on this query. John Washburn

Subject: Bradford County, Lane (Luthers Mills) Cemetery, ISBELL - Bailey
From: beorians@firstenergycorp.com
Date: Tue, 7 Dec 2010

Joyce, et. al.,
Has anyone seen an early ('original') map of the Lane (now Luthers Mills) Cemetery in Burlington Twp. of Bradford Co? Jean Wrisley indicates that the original map was lost. I understood from her that a map was recreated, which she has, but it contains primarily only Veterans names now. We are trying to get confirmation that my wife's grandmother, Mary Louise ISBELL Bailey (1883 - 1927) is buried in lot #58 at Luthers Mills (originally Lane) Cemetery. I don't see a Mary Bailey on your list for this cemetery, and the grave marker is either missing or unreadable. It is important that we find out, as my wife's dad, Edwin Bailey (Mary Bailey's youngest son), may be in his final days on this earth. An original map with names may be the only way we can be sure.

Subject: ALDRICH Nancy Bourne
From: bigwigmc@frontier.com

Hi Joyce,
According to many records, Nancy supposedly died in Tioga County, PA. She was married to Asahel Bourne 4 Nov 1833 and came to PA from Richmond, NH shortly after giving birth to her last son William in Oct. 1846. She is the daughter of Aaron Aldrich and Mary Harkness who resided in Thompson, Susquehanna, PA at the time. I think that is where Asahel and Nancy were going when she died. Asahel returns to Vermont after Nancy's death towing 5 children. Amazing considering. At any rate, any help would be great.

Thanks. Claudia McPherson

Hello. I am trying to locate the grave of John W. Wilson, my step great grandfather who died in early December 1891 in the Long Valley mine atop Barclay Mountain. Please see the newspaper article in the attached Adobe PDF file that tells of his accident and death.

I have checked interment records for about 10 cemeteries, with no success. I am wondering if you could suggest the most likely cemeteries where he might be buried. I would imagine it would be fairly close to Barclay Mountain, though not on it, if the Barclay Cemetery records are correct.

I appreciate any assistance or direction that you can offer. Thank you.

Dear Joyce - Thanks so much for your good work in maintaining this great webpage. Without pages like this family searches would be nearly impossible.

We're trying to track down my wife's maternal family and have hit a roadblock in Bradford County. Charles E. MORRIS was born in Bradford County in 1830. In 1853 he married Elizabeth BILES (also b. 1830) in Bradford County and their son Murry (Murray?) Ward MORRIS was born in 1857 in Bradford County at a place called "Shore's Hill" which I understand isn't really a town, but an area there. We have all the descendants from there to the present, and if there are others who want that information, we'll be happy to share it.

Our problem is that we can't find any record of Charles E. MORRIS' parents. In the 1880 US Census he said that his parents were born in Pennsylvania. Other than that the trail is cold.

We have his wife Elizabeth BILES' ancestors back to 1630 in Plymouth, Mass. if anyone's interested in that, also.

If your readers don't have any specific information on this, perhaps someone has a suggestion where we might look next. We've just about exhausted the more popular Internet search engines.

Many thanks and keep up the good work -

Thank you very much for the work you have done on your website. It has been very helpful for me in a research project I am doing regarding Louis T. McFadden. I have located the names of two of Louis McFadden's children on this page: http://www.joycetice.com/birth/bcb5mc.htm , but have not been able to locate the name of his third child. From: lovell@boo.net

Hello Joyce,
I am writing about Absalom Carey, who moved to Chemung, Chemung Co., NY in the early 1800's. He was my Gggg-Grandfather. I recently was able to visit Chemung/Waverly where I went specifically to find Absalom's grave. He is buried about a half-mile from Dry Brook Church on Dry Brook Road (cemetery next to 665 Dry Brook Rd.). I parked in the yard of said address and walked to the graveyard. I took several pictures of the cemetery. Here are some pictures that I took. I had quite a time finding the graveyard. One of the websites I found on-line on Absalom Carey said that the cemetery was on Chemung Road, but it isn't. Absalom Carey's tombstone reads as follows:

Absalom Carey
Soldier of the Revolution
Born
April 9, 1765
Died
Dec. 30, 1841
In the 77th year of his Age
Jesus can make a dying bed
feel soft as downy pillows are
White on his breast I lean my head
And breathe my life out sweetly therein

If you want to share these pictures, you have my permission. I would be interested in corresponding with anyone interested in the Carey family. My line goes as such:

I live in Fairfax, Virginia. My e-mail address is lovell@boo.net Thanks for the info from your website. Patsy Lovell

From: marymcafee47@carolina.rr.com

Dear Joyce,
My name is Mary McAfee. My husband, father's family is McAfee and were from Bradford, Athens, Tioga, Smithfield PA. I am just beginning to search their records. I have broused many of the McAfee sites on line and it seems many stories I read parallell many oral stories I heard from the family of my in -laws. It seems so many started in PA. I suspect my husband's line of McAfees were perhaps, the brother(s), uncles, or??, who stayed behind in PA before the migration to Va , Ind, Kentucky or one of these. We have a picture of Benjamin's tomb stone in the papers we received on the death of Harold Simmons McAfee (my father in law). The tombstone for Benjamin states him as having been a revolutionary pensionier. In addition I have some family records dating to 1839 of McAfee births, deats and marriages. These include Joseph b. Sept 19 1939 married Jan 15 1862 to Neoma Eastman Smithfield Pa She was born Dec23, 1838. Their children,

  1. William b.Feb 3rd 1865, no death recorded
  2. Jay McAfee b.Sept 1867 (Smithfield PA) d. June 26 1871
  3. Emma b JulyJuly28, 1878 (Smithfield PA) d. April 18 1874
  4. Louisa b April 1876 d June 10 1876 Frank McAfee from Smithfield PA was the father of Harold (my father-in -law.)

I have the original marriage certificate from Waverly (Pa or NY??)1904. He married Eugenis Simmons of Athens Pa. and he was buried in Tioga cemetary and I have his death notice which puts him as being born around 1850 dying in 1914 As I said I am very much a novice to this and thought I'd check with some of youwho seem to have traced so many of the lines already. I have found all of this absolutely facinating and have great respect for the hours you have all put into researching this. I thought perhaps you might already know wherethese McAfees fit or do not fit in and look to you first before re-creating the wheel (or rather tree). Perhaps this needs to go to Jay McAfee also? Any information or direction you might give me will be greatly appreciated. Many Thanks.

To: Have a website of emigrants - Emigrant.se. It's for those who have ancestors from Falköping area in Sweden. http://emigrant.se/en/english.html The website have lists of the emigrants birth and death. You find emigrants by two ways, birth parish and death state/country.

I also can help trying to find ancestors or/and familymembers of today. The catch is that the emigrants had to be born in someone of the 52 parishes in Falköping area. In return I like to have information about the family in the States. I build a data base of the emigrants and their families in the old country and the new one, so far there is 38 000 individuals in the base.

Joyce,
First of all I want to thank you and everyone for creating and maintaining this site. It eventually led me to the gravesite of my great grandfather Charles D KELSEY, a Civil War veteran who died Sept. 4, 1898 while living in Waverly NY. While the listing on the K1 page (http://www.joycetice.com/cemb/tiogptk1.htm) showed a Charles M KELSEY, I really was not sure if that was who I was looking for because of the discrepancy with the middle initial. However, the page also listed his two sons, Edward Thomas KELSEY and William H KELSEY and other KELSEY relatives so I took a chance and stopped by the cemetery on a trip through that area. To my delight I found William in section V and low and behold my Charles D Kelsey was right there nearby him. Almost as exciting was the discovery of a small stone several feet behind that of Charles and to the left of William and his wife Minnie with only the name "Wilma" across the top and the dates Feb. 7, Feb 10, 1903. I know my grandmother (Belle Louise KELSEY GURNSEY, daughter of Charles and sister of William) had a daughter named Wilma who died in infancy while they were living in Waverly, NY. With no surname on the stone I cannot be positive, but it makes sense that the infant would have been buried near her grandfather who had died just a few years before. I am attaching photos of the graves. I welcome input if anyone has other information and am willing to share what I know about these people.

Again, thanks for making these discoveries possible.

Hi Joyce, My wife and I were reading the information we found on the web site and there seems to be a some information wrong. The information telling of (I do not remember the page) it explains Waldos his war record and his mercantile and post-office. The info says that Waldo was the son of Hiram and Lucy Spear but if you look at the birth dates, Hiram was born 5 years after Waldo, which could make them brothers, Waldo being the eldest. At first I thought that it could have been a misprint but when I looked on my digital camera at the headstones I confirmed that these dates as I described are correct. My wonder goes on, who are they?

Another thing I wonder is who Hattie Spear? Her name appears the head stone with Hiram which leads me to think she could possibly be a second wife, I am speculating of course, I don't know. Also Lucy is buried in a seperate grave which could indicate that she had died early, before Hiram which might explain Hattie. Another headstone in the Bullock Cemetery which looks like it reads Mortimer Spear, born May 2nd 1835 died January 12 1890, I have no clue who he could be, I find this one ironic as my birth day is May 1st. I hope you can shed some light on this mystery.

Thanks again John Spear

Subject: RE: NURSE/NOURSE family of Chemung NY (resubmitted with surname in CAPS)
From: "Charlotte Brown", brown_charlie@verizon.net
Date: Mon, 06 Sep 2010

We have been trying to validate the NURSE / NOURSE family in Chemung, NY. There are 2 John NURSE s that we know are linked but cannot locate any marriage, birth or death records for these individuals. OR their parents. Based on the letter referenced below from my Great Grand Aunt Nora to my great grandmother regarding their mother Lucy’s death, the family of J. Henry Nurse (from the 1st john) cared for Lucy at the NURSE Family Farm on Elston Hollow Rd. And the letter talks about how upset Jim (James Walter NURSE) was regarding the death of their mother. Nora and Edith (my great grandmother were from the marriage of Lucy and Harrison HINE). Jim (James Walter NURSE) was from the marriage of Lucy and John NURSE.

I have some dates noted in the family bible but nothing that validates marriages or how these 2 Johns are connected. They cannot be the same John because Lucy is a widow when the 1st John (1818) was listed as a widower.

If you have some info I would love to have it and if there is a reference book that can validate this, I would love to find it! We live outside of Alexandria Virginia. Thank you for any info you can provide! CM Brown

Here are the brief facts of what we know (I have more):
John NURSE- was born in Dec 1818 in New York, USA
Waity UNKNOWN was born about 1823 in Pennsylvania, USA[1]. She died between 1874-1880 in Chemung, New York, USA (John is listed as a widower and had 2 sons living with him.)[5]. John Nurse and Waity UNKNOWN were married about 1843 in Chemung, New York, USA. They had the following children:
i. Mary NURSE was born about 1844 in New York, USA[1]. She died between 1850-1860 in Chemung, Chemung, New York, USA (Not listed in the 1860 census with her parents and brothers.).
ii. J. Henry NURSE was born in Aug 1847 in New York, USA[1, 4, 7]. He married Eliza WIDON about 1872 in Chemung, New York, USA. He died between 1910-1920 in Baldwin, Chemung, New York, USA (Not listed in 1920 census - his wife Eliza is listed as a widow.). – Daughter Fanny who married a Roll and had son Manning Roll. – They cared for Lucy.
iii. Ansel J. NURSE was born about May 1849 in Chemung, Chemung, New York, USA.
iv. Luman NURSE was born in Dec 1858 in Chemung, New York, USA. He married Nora Murphy about 1884 in Chemung, New York, USA
v. William NURSE was born about 1858 in Chemung, New York, USA
vi. Sophrona “Fiona” NURSE was born in Apr 1864 in Chemung, New York, USA[3, 11]. She died on 04 Oct 1943 in Horseheads, Chemung, New York, USA
vii. James NURSE was born about 1874 in Chemung, New York, USA ************************************************************************************** John NURSE - was born between 1836-1841 (rough estimate) in Elmira, Chemung, New York, USA. He died between 1877-1880 in Elmira, Chemung, New York, USA.(based on the census for Lucy).

Lucy Ann FOOTE daughter of Gideon FOOTE and Lavinia GILLETT was born on 21 Feb 1837 in Nicholson, Wyoming, Pennsylvania, USA (Bible has Lucy born 1834)[. She died on 30 Dec 1913 in Baldwin, Chemung, New York, USA (Lucy died at the Nurse Family Farm in her chair about 2:30 am. Bible has Lucy's death Dec 31, 1913)

The census for 1900 Chemung Co., New York (Elmira) indicates Lucy's birth to be Feb 1835. Lucy was 1st married and widowed between the ages of 13 and 23 years old. She was married the 2nd time at the age of 26 and widowed at the age of 34. She was married the 3rd time at age 36 and widowed between the ages of 40 and 43. According to the letter from Great GrandAunt Nora, to her sister Edith (Lucy's daughters), Lucy died Dec 30, 1913 at 2:30 a.m. "seated in chair no struggle just fell asleep". Nora indicated that "we laid her to rest beside Bessie in McCumber Graveyard near red school house Friday Jan 2 at 11:00 a.m...it had snowed and was cold [10 degrees below 0].." Nora indicated that the pallbearers were: Westly Greatsinger, George Inman, William McIntyre and William Elston. Lucy was 76 years old at her time of death.

Research in the pallbearers names indicated that several families named Greatsinger lived in Chemung Co., Horseheads and Elmira townships. George H. Inman and his family lived next to Alfred and Bertha (Lucy’s daughter) Dean in 1910, Elmira, New York. William McIntyre also lived in Elmira, New York in 1910.

John NURSE and Lucy Ann FOOTE were married in Apr 1873 in Elmira, Chemung, New York, USA (based on Bible note) They had the following children:
i. James “Jim” Walter NURSE was born on 21 Dec 1874 in Elmira, Chemung, New York, USA. He married Sophrona “Fiona” HINE in 1897 in Elmira, Chemung, New York, USA (her parents are not known). He died after 1920 in Niagara Falls, Niagara, New York, USA.
ii. Margaret “Bessie” NURSE was born on 27 Sep 1877 in Elmira, Chemung, New York, USA. She married Alfred DEAN in 1893 in Elmira, Chemung, New York, USA (Bible indicates 1893, Foote book indicates 1894.). She died in 1897 in Elmira, Chemung, New York, USA. They had 2 children: Bertha and Earl.

Hi,
I am looking for more information/ancestry on ZARA W. JOSLYN, b. 1815 in Cayuga. and/or his father LINDSEY (LINDSAY) JOSLYN. I know that Zara was a doctor for years in Mt. Morris, and his father founded the gristmill in Nunda in 1828 with Samuel Swain. I see a reference to MORGAN L. JOSLYN of Cayuga, a Revolutionary War soldier, d. 1836, but am unsure if this is Lindsay's father. I also wonder if there is a connection to Dr. Hezekiah Joslyn, as it seems he and Zara were contemporaries. My great-great grandfather was John R. Joslyn, son of Zara, brother of Mary Joslyn Smith. It was very exciting to finally find a reference to his father, as that is a part of the puzzle that I did not have.

Any information would be much appreciated!

What could my ancestor be doing working in iron in Chemung in the 1840s? What could my ancestor have been doing in iron in Bradford County in the 1850s?

He was John Lassell Drake (1805-1874). John came from a line of DRAKEs and LEONARDs who have worked in iron in an unbroken line since the 1500s (in Wales; Saugus, Mass; Norton, Mass.; Taunton, Mass.; Bennington, VT; then Chemung Co., then Athens, PA, then steel, finally Philadelphia.). If you can tell me something about iron works in Chemung or Bradford, I am all ears.

What was the name of an iron works in Chemung? What was the name of an iron works in Athens, Bradford County? What was this iron that they made used for?

How far is it from Chemung (town in Chemung Co., N.Y.) to Athens (town in Bradford Co., PA)?

Thank you!

Subject: Tioga County, 1880's and 90's, Andrew Young, James Cowan, Mary Walker, Thomas Cowan
From: "LINDA CLARK" linda_ann@verizon.net
Date: Wed, 30 Jun 2010 11:57:40 -0400

Greetings and thanks for all the information you have made available to people like me wanting to fill in the blanks in their family's history.

My grandfather, James Walker came with his mother, Mary Walker, to Antrim in 1882. They probably lived briefly with Mary's sister, Ann, who was married to William Walker. They had at least 9 children, most significant to us would be Andrew who was my grandfather's age and Annie for whom I think my mother was named.

Within 7 months of Mary's arrival, she married Thomas Cowan in Antrim on Christmas Day, 1882. My grandfather became James Cowan at that time.

At some point, they left Antrim for another coal mine in Anita, Jefferson County, PA. I'm assuming it might have been around 1888 because the mining superintendent in Antrim moved to take over the new mines in Jefferson County at that time.

Also, Mary seemed to have another son, Robert Walker, who did not move to Anita with the family. Instead, he married a girl named Eva in 1891 and spent the rest of his life in Wellsboro. I don't believe they had any children.

Do you have any additional information about these people? For example: Are there any records of Thomas Cowan, James Cowan or Mary Cowan? What about James Walker, Mary Walker, or Robert Walker? Do you have information about William Young, his wife, Ann, or their children, Andrew and Annie.

I'm especially interested in information about the 1880's and 90's.

Thank you for your help. Linda Clark

He lived for a time in Yates and Steuben Co., NY, near his siblings. I'm aware of two ch: Betsey, b. ca. 1814, d. 1851 in Tioga. She m. John HALL. John W's second child is Sarah (Sally) b. ca. 1825 in Wayne, Steuben Co., NY, and m. James BRADY. I suspect a third child may be William D. RARICK, b. ca. 1818 in Steuben Co., and d. 23 May 1869, prob. in Tyrone, Schuyler Co., NY. He's my g.g.g.grandfather, and my brick wall. John W. RARICK d. 19 Dec 1851 in Chatham, Tioga Co. His obituary follows:

From the Auburn Christian Advocate, date ambiguous) "John Rarick died in Chatham, Dec. 19, 1851. Father Rarick was born in Dutchess county, N.Y., June 12, 1777. He experienced religion the 15th day of January, 1844. Soon afterwards, he joined the M.E. Church, in the town of Wayne, Steuben county, N,.Y., under brother Bacon's labors. He was always faithful in the discharge of his duty as a Christian, in his family and in the Church, and in meetings his seat was never found unoccupied, when he was able to attend. He suffered much in body, for the last eight months. During all of his affliction, he was resigned to his lot, and towards the last, he was anxiously looking for the hour that should release him from earth and land him in heaven, his long-sought rest.

R. Macomber. Little Marsh, Pa. January 1852"

Is there someone in Tioga Co. who would be willing to check for me to see if John W. left a will? Just knowing there is one would make it easier to determine if I should be making a trip to PA to abstract it. If a local researcher is willing to abstract such a will, I'd be very grateful.

Thank you for your help,

My name is Denis Gosling and I am researching my family tree.

My interest is in the Sage family from Tipperary in Ireland.

I see on your web site descendants of Andrew Brennan and Cathy Mahar,  you have indicated that Cathy lived with a Jane Sage

Would you know where Jane Sage or her husband originated from?

I do not know if they are part of the same family but a Peter Maher  (spelled with an e) was a boxer in Ireland before he went to live in  Philadelphia Pennsylvania  in the late 1800s. There he later became  the world heavyweight boxing champion, only later to be beaten in  1896 by Bob Fitzsimmons.

Whilst living in Ireland and possibly America his manager was a man  named Sage.

In the 1911 Irish census for Dublin, there is Anne Maher living in  the household of the Sage family.

I would be grateful if you have any knowledge to see if any of the  names are related.

Kind regards

Hello,

I recently ran across the following bio for Aaron BAILEY, who was born about 1784 and died 4 May 1857 in Cameron County, PA. In the bio, Aaron's first wife is listed as Mary RUTTY, daughter of John RUTTY of Tioga, PA. His second wife was Savilla MYERS of Lycoming, PA.
I see that there were many BAILEY's and RUTTY's in the Tricounty area but have not been able to find anything about John RUTTY. Neither have I had any luck locating the parents of Aaron BAILEY.

Is anyone familiar with these families?

Hello,
I am looking for information on my grandfather and great-grandfather.  My great-grandfather was Russell Myron MARVIN. He used Russell as his first name earlier in life, and Myron later in life.  He was born in Smithville Flats, Chenago, New York on 24June, 1853 and died, according to family information in Athens, Bradford, PA on 28Feb, 1933.  He was the son of Alanson Marvin and the brother of Seth Marvin, Civil War Veteran.  I am looking for cemetery  information on Russell Myron.

I am also looking for military information on Charles Myron MARVIN, born 25Mar, 1893 in Syracuse, Onondaga, New York.  He died and was buried in Fullerton, CA on 7Mar, 1942.  He served in WWI as part of a  PA Motor Truck Company,  and was stationed and living, after the war, at Ft. Wingate, McKinley, New Mexico.  Although the military information is listed on his gravestone, and I have photos of him while in the military, I cannot locate any records (draft cards, etc.) to corroborate that he did indeed serve.

I would appreciate any information anyone might have on either of the above.
Thank you,
Marilyn Marvin-Becker

My father is 82 years old and knows very little about his family.  I have been trying with some success to fill in the gaps.  I am hoping you can help me with some of them.

First, I'm looking for information on my great-grandmother, Anna Catherine (or Catherine Anna) FURMAN Kline Liston.  Her death certificate (in Texas) states that she was born 3 Dec 1853 in Wellsboro.  Her father is listed as Hartley Furman and her mother as Amanda "Rass.".  I have spent many hours searching the site and have found references to Hartley and Harkley Furman.  I also found the obituary for Sarah E. Furman French that listed Mrs. Ann Liston as a surviving sister.  All I know about her is that "Annie" was married to Thomas Kline in 1870 at age 16 and living in Emporium.  Cameron County has an excellent genealogy website as well and I've found some information there.  Reuben and Sarah (Furman) French were also living there at the time. By 1880 she was widowed with 3 small children.  I know she married my great grandfather sometime between 1881-84 as my great-uncle James and grandfather, Benjamin Furman Liston were born after that.  Her older sister Amanda (she would have been about 17 when my great-grandmother was born) appears to have married a G.C. Manley.  Amanda and my great uncle James and some of the Klines are all buried in a plot in Emporium.  Amanda died in 1865 when Annie was about 11. I am also curious about Hartley Furman's family.  In the 1850 census before my grandmother was born there was Hartley's wife Catherine (b. 1817) and several children listed:  Amanda, Sarah E, Benjamin, Darwin.  Yet, in 1860 Hartley appears to be living alone.  I would like to know what happened to them.  Was Catherine my great-great grandmother? Also, in researching I've found other family trees that list Hartley Furman, but there seems to be some discrepancies.  Several list a Benjamin Furman b. 1771 as his father, but I believe his father was a Benjamin Furman born in NJ in 1787.  However, I have no concrete information.  I would like to know who were the parents of the Benjamin Furman born in 1787.  The family trees I have seen list Daniel Furman (wife Elizabeth Elsa Kribbs Lewis).  But after that there are two different parents listed for Daniel.  One is John and ELizabeth Alburtis Furman from NY and the other is Samuel and Mary Holcombe Furman from NJ.  I don't know which one is correct. If you have any information that might clarify any of these mysteries, I would be very grateful.  I have taken on this project as a gift to my father who is 82. I would be happy to share any of the information I have gathered, or help out with the site time permitting.

Sincerely, Felicia Liston Avila

Hi! My name is Kevin D. Bacon and I am searching for ancestors who I believe had come from the Van Etten region of Chemung County, New York. My great great great great grandfather was Cornelius VanDeBurgh (1790-1871) and he was married in 1808 to Nancy Swartwood (1791-1833) and they had nine children (all born in New York) they were 1. Sarah, 2. Cyntha, 3. Catherine, 4. Jane, 5. Catherine, 6. Abram, 7. Mary, 8. Harry and 9. Hiram. This family removed to Pennsylvania sometime after 1827 and by 1830 they were in Lorain County, Ohio where the mother died in 1833 from a snake bite. Cornelius remarried about 1838 and moved his family to DeKalb County, Illinois in 1845 where he resided until his death in 1871. The second daughter, Cyntha VanDeBurgh was married in 1831 to James Dimon (his mother, Elizabeth Dimon is buried in West Brook cemetery as is their daughter,Caroline Dimon.) Cyntha and James Dimon remained at Van Etten until 1852 when they removed to Illinois to join other members of her family. I am interested in learning more about her Swartwood family and his Dimon family. Was wondering if their is anybody who might shed some light on my ancestry?

Thank You!

The 1860 census record indicates a family of ESTEL residing in Bradford County, Towanda (spelling) township, and lists the following. George Estel Age 35 Hotel Keeper, his wife and children are also listed.  I am particularly interested in George Estel, listed as age 7 as I believe him to possibly be my great grandfather.  There was a George Estel who married Mary Smyth (or Smith) in Marion County, WV and lists his place of residency as Pennsylvania.  Any additional information establishing further records of George Estel would be of great interest to me and our family.  We have joked for a long time that George was the first person in the witness protection program, since there has been so little known about him.  As further information, George and Mary both passed away with 3 very young children in the late 1800s and are buried at the Mt Nebo cemetery near Bunner Ridge, Fairmont, West Virginia.  Thanks so much for your kind attention to our request for information.

Joel, his wife Eleanor, and son Henry Elisha resided in this area for some time and are buried at the LeeCemetery. I am curious about the source(s) of the following information. Particularly information pertaining about where he was born and who his parents were.

JOEL CHAMBERLAIN was born in Maryland, Otsego county, New York, in 1795, a son of Elisha and Deborah (Holdridge) Chamberlain, natives of New England and pioneers of Otsego county. In 1840 he came with his family to Chatham township, Tioga county, Pennsylvania, where he cleared and improved a farm, subsequently removing to Farmington township, where he died at the residence of his son, Henry, February 1, 1869, in his seventy-fourth year. His wife, Eleanor, was a daughter of Henry Waite, of Otsego county, New York, and died in Chatham township, June 26, 1879, in her seventy-seventh year. Their children were as follows: David W., Henry E., Jonathan Ed., Martha A., who married Eli Beard; Sally D., who married Oscar Clark; William, Eleanor, who married Frank Andrews; Joel, and Esther M., who married Samuel Kendrick. Mr. Chamberlain was a member of the Christian church, while his wife was a Presbyterian. In politics, he supported the Republican party, and was a member of the Masonic order. I am looking for information on my grandfather William Vincent  he was born July 17,1895 and died August 1,1935. I know he was probably born out of wedlock that his mother's last name was Vincent his father was Perry Heeman. it seems that at the age of 5 he ended up in his father's care I do not know if his mom passed away or something else happeneI have a photo of him in WW1 army uniform, but I have no idea where he served. He ended in New York married to my grandmother Anna Fitzpatrick they were married in PA in 1920, they had eight children but sadly the children were small when he died in 1935 or they never asked him about growing up but I am curious we all go by the surname Vincent (even though it should be Heeman) as far as I can tell. I would love to know more about his mother I think her name was Mary Vincent.however Vincent may have been a married name (from a first marriage) her maiden name may have been Wood.

Thank you,

Seeking information regarding William HUMMER born 25 November 1831 (New York or New Jersey?). He was married to my great-great grandmother Catherine SWAYZE on 25 March 1852 in Sullivanville, Chemung, NY. Catherine was the daughter of Daniel SWAYZE who was born in New Jersey and settled in Chemung County (died in Chemung County on 2 November 1850). Catherine was born on 14 July, 1836 in Horseheads and had a brother named Cashaday.

William and Catherine had two children 1) William Alexander HUMMER born 11 March 1853 (Chemung County, NY?)/died 23 December 1923 and Daniel Johnson HUMMER born 2 September 1855 (Chemung County?) / died 26 December 1888.

Family lore states that William HUMMER served in the Civil War (around 30 years old), and died of disease in Andersonville. However, I can't find any Civil War records regarding his service representing New York, his death or burial in New York, or a pension for his wife Catherine. She married John T. Martin on 10 May, 1865, which may have been shortly after William's death. As a result, she may not have requested a pension for her first husband's service.

I see many "HUMMER" families in Chemung County and am hoping someone has information regarding William.

Sincerely ~ Laura Lewis (lauralewis57@comcast.net)

Good morning: I am attempting to locate additional information (obits., births, city directories, etc.) for Michael DAILEY and Bridget Hewitt Daily (and their family), all of whom I have located on the 1900, 1910, and 1920 Federal Census living in Elmira.  Michael and Bridget originally came from Genesee County and he worked on the "steam" railroad. I believe Michael to be the only brother/sibling to my maternal great grandmother, Johanna Dailey RYAN.  We believe them to be of the Catholic faith.

I am searching for any info about my gr. grandparents JOHN & BRIDGET FITZPATRICK.They are in Elmira in 1860, however they are in Williamsport in 1870. Williamsport is where they raised their family and all died there. While in Elmira they gave birth to 5 children,

All of the above are buried in Williamsport, with the exception of Mary.
I can not find any info on Mary other then in the 1860 federal census, there it states she was 4 months old when census was taken in July of 1860. After 1860 she just disappears, I am fairly sure she died before 1865 as she does not appear in the 1865 Elmira census with the rest of the family.

Any info can you find on this FITZPATRICK family would be soooo greatly appreciated, especially on Mary. I would be most interested to know where Mary is buried.

I believe the FITZPATRICKS had a short stay in Amity before coming to Elmira, however I do not have proof of that, therefore, any marriage info you could find on BRIDGET "MCCORMICK" and JOHN FITZPATRICK would be so helpful. I would guess the marriage took place about 1855.Thank You in advance for any help you can provide.

I am looking for the parents of Roxanna Beeman b. 15 May 1788 in CT, d. 13 Apr 1870 in Bradford Co. She was married to Daniel about 1804 in Bradford Co. I believe her father may have been Timothy Beeman, as she was supposed to be from Wyalusing when she married, and the only Beemans in Wyalusing at that time were Timothy and his cousins, Nathan and Aaron (I think Aaron was too young to be her father).

Timothy and Grace Bliss had six children, 3 of them females, but I can only find names for two, Urania (married Cornelius Quick) and Theda (married Julius Cogswell). I believe Roxanna might be the third daughter, but can't find anything that would prove that. Her age also fits in with the other children.

Greetings! I am looking for information on my Great-Great Grandparents Robert MILLER and Frances GREEN(E?) and their families. Both were born and raised in Bradford County. They were married on October 6, 1876 most likely in Bradford Co., but that is not known for sure. I know that at least two of their children were born in PA., Fred and Louise(a?) so they remained in Bradford until at least 1882.

Robert was born on October 10 1850 or 51? in Bradford County. According to his death certificate, and family knowledge, his parents were Henry MILLER and Catherine LOVE. We know of 4 Siblings, Kate(Catherine?), Jacob, William, and Linda.

Linda was born on July 10 1856. She married a SMITH and after his death she then married his brother, I am not sure which she was married to first, or where the marriages occurred, but their names were Henry and Nelson.

Frances GREEN(E?) was born on May 28th 1851, Athens PA. Her parents were John GREEN(E?) and Catherine "Kitty" EVANS. She had at least 4 Siblings, Steve(Stephen?), Charley(Charles?), Louise, and Sarah. Louise married a Durance CROSBY or COSBY. They had 4 daughters Catherine, Flora, Sarah, and Libby. Sarah GREEN(E?) married and Al HICKS who was a carpenter.

Any information about these families would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!

Hello,

I'm fairly confident that part of my family history resides with the early Millers of Richmond Township, Tioga County PA. In particular, Josiah and Lanson Miller who were born around 1810 and moved to Illinois in the 1830s.  They were brothers and I believe had a sister Lura Almira who was born in 1818 and accompanied them to Illinois.

I am trying to determine the names of the other family siblings, and their parents.  I have some photos of Lura that I can share as well as some family stories. It appears that Lanson married Laura Emily Eaton.  I'm not sure who Josiah married.  His wife may have passed away in the 1930s, but I assume his children would have accompanied him to Illinois.

Any information, stories, or photos that anyone has would be greatly appreciated.  I would like to do an extended genealogy of this Miller lineage.
Thank-you,

Hi Joyce, I am hoping to find a date of death and place of burial for a WIRT E. LINDLEY, son of SAMUEL L. LINDLEY and MARY ANN GREENE. I believe that Wirt was born May 13, 1865 in Leroy Township. His first marriage to MARTHA LILLIAN SHADDUCK (June 14, 1877 - February 19, 1922), daughter of ALBERT FRANK SHADDUCK and EMMA AUGUSTA WHITE, ended in divorce with one child, LURA (my Great-Grandmother). He is listed in the 1920 Towanda census with his 2nd wife CATHERINE ?, step-daughter ZELPHIA BENJAMIN and step-grandson RICHARD BRISTOL.

I noticed an Index of Bradford County Deaths that lists Wirt and Catherine in what I assume is a newspaper date of January 23, 1930....is there anyone available to check the Bradford Newspaper archives for that date? I'm not sure who's obit this is, but it is apparently someone from the Lindley family.

I would also love to hear from any descendants of any of these families! Thank you, Joseph R. McGill Parishville, NY

He married Betsy CAMPBELL, d/o James CAMPBELL and Jane KNOX of Hampton Co. MA. (Betsy CAMPBELL/SMITH 2nd married Oliver SHERMAN). Lydia NEWBRE was d/o John and Prudence (possible nee WELCH) NEWBRE. Derrick SMITH was s/o Ebenezer SMITH and Winjte/Wainche HOGABOOM of Berkshire Co. MA., and descended from Lt. Samuel SMITH (Fellmonger), of Hadley and Wethersfield, CT. These SMITHS were probably related to Ichabod SMITH of Bradford Co. PA., formerly of MA.

My husband's father was born in Clymer, PA in 26 Dec 1906. The family lived there from 1903-1907. I am looking for any information on any families living there named Bator or Foto. They were immigrants from Croatia and probably worked in the mines.

Hello, Does anyone recognize this couple? I want to know why my great-grandparents, John B. and Margaret "Maggie" ADAMS came to live in Bradford Co. between 1920 and 1926. John B. was born James YEAGER in Juniata Co. 1849, canal boatman in Schuylkill Co. 1870, between 1880 and 1910 they lived in Clinton Co., 1910 they're back in Juniata Co., 1920 in Snyder Co. (in their 70's) and in Jan. 1926 John B. died in Sayre, June 1926 Maggie died in Chemung Co., N.Y. Maggie was a TROUT, her grandfather a BILLGER, grandmother a MATTHIERS.

I'm guessing Maggie died at St. Joseph's in Elmira, but I don't know why they were both buried in Swartwood Cemetery, Van Etten. Any suggestions?

Regards, Joan Gabrie Bucks Co., PA

Seeking a connection between William and Eunice LATTIN (and their children George E., Carria, Wilson Henry and Deller) shown in the 1860 and 1870 Veteran Census and the other LATTIN families in the area. Family lore is that William died about age 40 of pneumonia after the 1870 Census and the family scattered. I do find a William LATTIN ( d. 30 Aug 1870 ) buried in Pine Valley Cemetery, Town of Catlin (http://www.joycetice.com/cemc/pineval2008.htm) and a Eunice, widow of William, in the 1874 Boyd's directory (http://www.joycetice.com/director/1874p156.htm). Don't know if they are the same, however.

I also believe Burton LATTIN (1799 - 1873) - first cousin, once removed of Abiad / Abiard LATTIN, had five boys (public Ancestry tree at http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/4468840/person/-102863183), one of whom was a William. However, I have found nothing definite to link William to Burton nor to the William buried in Pine Valley. Another public family tree claims that Abiard's brother, Abner, also had a son named William, but no citations are offered in proof.

George Edward LATTIN is my great grandfather and I show him in various Censuses in Reading Township (1900 & 1910) and Watkins (1920 & 1930) and possibly the 1860 & 1870 Veteran Censuses. However, I do not have a definite connection between William LATTIN and his ancestors. Nor do I yet have proof that George E is, in fact, my George Edward. In trying to narrow down the connection, I have linked over 400 people, many LATTINS in the Veteran area which I would be pleased to share if anyone has an interest (with the caution that I have been more focused on trying to identify George E than providing complete citations on all).

Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you - Jim Warters (jawarters@aol.com)

Subject: Spurrell deed - Tioga/Lawrenceville
From: "Jonathan C. Spurrell" jcspurrell@hotmail.com

Dear Joyce,
I have recently discovered your website and more specifically Chapter 44 of the 1897 Tioga County History.

It mentions an 1820 deed from Charles Spurrell of Surrey, England, for 169 acres in Lawrenceville/Tioga.

I currently live in Paris, France, but my family is originally from Norfolk, England. In the early 1800s, my great-great-great-grandfather Charles Spurrell left Norfolk and settled in Surrey and in 1818 he inherited some land on the death of his uncle William Flaxman. Flaxman's will is very vague. It says merely "my lands in North America".

For years I have wondered where these lands might have been. I have recently begun to think that some of the Flaxmans might have been Quakers, which is why I have been searching on the internet today for possible Flaxman or Spurrell connections with Pennsylvania - and that's how I found your website. I would love to discover more about those 169 acres in Lawrenceville/Tioga and try to prove that there's a connection with my family. Who owned them before Charles Spurrell? Was it William Flaxman - and if so, how did he acquire them? Did Charles Spurrell sell them - and if so, when?

This land is not mentioned in the will of my great-great-great-grandfather Charles Spurrell. It is only mentioned once in all the documents I have found relating to my family (the Flaxman will) so unfortunately I can provide you with no more information.

If you could help me out, or you know someone who can, it would be great if you could get in touch with me.

Many thanks, Jonathan Spurrell jcspurrell@hotmail.com

Dear Joyce,
I am looking for information on my Great Grandfather, Orwell Cleveland born 1854 , Vermont. I know he had a family with Harriet but my Grandfather came along later in his life just before Orwell died. I have found the family in the 1870 census but I can not find them in the 1880 census with their mother whose name I only know stars with an L. Later she married a Mr Davis who was known as chicken thief Davis in our family tradition. My Grandfather , Melvin Daniel Cleveland, born 1878 Tioga, PA had a brother named Robert born 1877, who moved to New Jersey. They were put out of the Davis home early on and lived with Orwell's first family. Does your data base have any information on them.; Our family tradition says that Mrs. L. Davis was a Cherokee Indian. Can you nelp me at all.

Thank You, Janet Hennard Wellsville, New York
